I Have Toshiba Tecra 8200

This item was designed fro use with Windows NT4 or Win2000 so XP may have driver errors.
If you have upgraded XP to SP3 try updates from Windows for a fix, otherwise re instalation of the original OS may be needed.
Have you run CHKDSK/F to check for hard drive errors? That is most likely to be the problem as if the drive is formatted to anything other than FAT32 you may be getting read errors.
Nice old machine. It will be a shame to have to ditch it.

Does not find the extra

First--check how much memory the computer can take.
Make sure you don't exceed it.
Be advised that some brands of memory don't play well with others.
Be sure you are installing the correct type of memory.

Just bought a used one.

PLug the AC adaptor with the laptop and start charging the battery.
wait for 5 mins and see if there is a indication of power on the laptop.
Usually on the left side at the top of your keyboard the power button is located you can press that to turn on the laptop.
Else there may be a problem with the laptop.

THE LAPTOP WORKS FINE BUT

Every laptop that is coming to the market has a button the bottom left just next to the "Crtl" button. This button says "Fn". On the other hand please find the buttons that are marked with dark Sun or a white sun. These buttons are for decreasing or increasing brightness. Just press down the "Fn" key (or button) and then press the key with the white sun on it. The brightness of the laptop screen will increase.
The keys with sun symbol on it are usually the arrow keys.

Good Luck!

I have a Tecra 8200 bought as used fitted with

This laptop came with 128mb ram, you can safely install 2 sticks of 256mb for a maximum of 512mb with no bios update.
You need pc100 sodimms.
Amazon or ebay will be the best bet as this memory is expensive now from a retailer.
I found 256mb sticks for under $10 buy it now on ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/256MB-SODIMM-PC100-SDRAM-256-MB-PC-100-LAPTOP-144-Pin-/190411543153?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c55699271
