Had same problem after only 3 months, tech looked at it said had a power circuit problem causing it to keep cycling, they exchanged my TV. No problem since.
can you feel if the surface is rough has it been cleaned with an abrasive cloth like a scouring cloth used for dishes as this will scratch the surface of the screen try getting a good polish spray on but dont spray to much on and use a soft cloth ideally a proper duster cloth see if they polish out if not the the screen surface has been scratched this can be polished out but you will need to get a pro to do this as doing it your self could ruin the telly permanenty as this is a delicate job to do hopefully you should polish these marks off but if not i would get somebody out to look at the telly to get the scratches polished out of the screen this should not cost to much but will save the frustration of watching a smuged screen the only thing you can do yourself is try polishing the screen properly in case she cleaned it and the cleaning product is still on screen if not you will need to get the screen profesionally polished goto a tv repair shop and these should tell you who to call hope this is some help to you but their isnt much you can do yourself
booboo43,
How's the lamp?? Sounds like a lamp failure which is the most likely problem with these units. The lamp for that unit is Toshiba p/n# 23311083x but a better source would be http://www.dlplampsource.com/ and they have it for $199.00 dollars with free shipping...
If the line is all that is showing with black on the top and bottom. This indicates a loss of vertical deflection which is caused by the loss of the veritcal sweepignal. Check the output of the vertical section of the TV set. You will need an oscilloscope, and multimeter along with a schematic.
You need to change the two convergence IC's - Generic part# STK392-110, Panasonic part# C5AA00000203. You might have problems using the generic #, I would use the Panasonic #
Your bulb may be blowing because of airflow issues or power cycling issues, first does your outlet get switched off at any point in time? if so you may be killing the bulb before it cools, if you turn the set on/off alot and or restart it after off quickly this could lead to permature bulb failure, if the original lamp was not replaced with a proper lamp to match the ballast it could blow the bulb. If your tv is too near a heat vent or the airflow thru the set is not adequate it could blow the bulb.
Hi Krautner,
We have a Toshiba and experienced the same problem this morning. It is very similar to your symptoms: big black box in centre-lower part of screen. It sometimes disappears momentarily when you select a feature such a "mute" for the same amount of time the screen displays that function. Once the "mute" signal disappears, the black box comes on again.
I fixed the problem by turning off the close captioning function. Somehow, it had actually got switched on. It runs fine now.
I suppose you have already found a fix since you posted back in May....but hopefully this helps you or someone else putting in a similar search for this fix.
Cheers
Geo
Could be dust in the optical engine? There could also be marks on the mirror?
You can get a sort of a similar problem in the LG RE44SZ22 when the light
tunnel becomes warperd due to heat from the lamp.
Best regards,
Arpi
I am assuming that when the set blanks out, you don't notice the power light flashing any certain sequence. What I would try if that is the case, would be to press a button on the remote control to bring up a menu on screen when it blanks out. If you can bring up any writing on screen while the picture is blanked out you know the Lamp is doing its job. Also, do you lose audio when this happens? If so, it could be a problem in the power supply or if you have the cable connected directly into the TV's tuner stub, the problem might lie in the Tuner. If you have On Screen Display when this happens and audio, then it looks like there is a problem in the video circuits of the TV. If you have a cable box hooked into the TV, the problem could be there also. Now you know why the Toshiba Repair Center gets the big bucks to figure out these things.
If you are connected to a HD cable box or sat. rcvr. using component cables, I would then suspect a loose or bad blue connection or cable. If you have Comcast and have their supplied flat component cable this is a common issue.
You mention that the unit is 2 months old. It should be under warranty and should be covered by the store you purchased it from or the manufacturer. If you or any unauthorized person works on it you will void the warranty and besides that's what you paid for when you bought it. Have it looked at by the appropriate warranty person or facility.
If its a brand new set and never worked from the get go I bet ya 10 to 1 that theres a plug or clip lose in the set someware. Hope ya got a warrantee as you should have unless you bought if off A corner someware. Call the repair service # thats in the owners manual to get it fixed asap. Good Luck
This is a known issue with this TV. The following might resolve it:
Check Mute and Volume:
Ensure that the TV is not muted and that the volume is set appropriately. Sometimes accidental button presses can lead to muted sound or low volume.
Inspect External Speakers:
If you're using external speakers, verify their connections. Loose cables or faulty speakers can cause sound issues.
Test Different Inputs:
Connect a non-HDMI device (such as a DVD player) to the TV. Observe if the sound distortion occurs. If it doesn't, the problem might be related to the HDMI signal from your Virgin box.
HDMI Troubleshooting:
If the issue persists with the DVD player over HDMI, consider the following:
HDMI Cable: Check the HDMI cable for damage or loose connections.
Virgin Signal: Contact Virgin to inspect the signal/lines and replace the box if necessary.
Mainboard Replacement (if needed):
If the sound distortion persists, it could be due to a faulty sound processor chip on the TV's mainboard. In this case, consider replacing the mainboard.

There may be loose contact or track open in main board. So try to check the main board thoroughly where you may find the loose of connection or track open.
Locate the Battery Cover: Look for the battery cover on the back of the remote control. It is usually a small compartment that can be easily opened.
Remove the Battery Cover: Depending on the design, there may be a latch, screw, or sliding mechanism to secure the battery cover. Use your fingers or a small screwdriver to open the compartment.
Remove Old Batteries: Take out the old batteries from the battery compartment. Pay attention to the orientation of the batteries, so you know how to insert the new ones correctly.
Check Battery Polarity: Take note of the positive (+) and negative (-) signs inside the battery compartment. Make sure to insert the new batteries with the correct polarity to match these markings.
Insert New Batteries: Place the new batteries into the battery compartment, ensuring they are properly aligned with the correct polarity. Press them down gently to make sure they are secure.
Replace Battery Cover: After inserting the new batteries, close the battery compartment cover securely. If it has a latch or screw, make sure it is fastened properly.
Test the Remote: Point the remote at the device it controls (such as a Toshiba TV) and test whether it responds to your commands. If the remote is working correctly, you have successfully replaced the batteries.
Dispose of Old Batteries: If the old batteries are no longer usable, make sure to dispose of them properly. Many communities have designated recycling locations for batteries.

They are purely a numerical identifier of when it was made, year, day, number on the shift, whether it Joe or Billy who did final inspection.
With a MODEL number I can find them easily with just 'make model manual'.
