Ice Maker too slow

My Whirlpool side by side ice maker is making ice way too slow. It was really fast before. Iv'e had it for 2 years now. The water is filling fast enough and the temp is low enough, but it is very slow through the cycle to dump and refill with water. Is there anyway to adjust the speed of the cycle? Thanks for the help..........

bayfishr, I'll try to give you an idea on how this thing works and let you do some checks. The cycle is controlled by temp. The harvesting process begins when the IM thermostat closes signaling the harvest temp has been reached. The closed thermostat supplies power to the IM motor and heater. Therefore the colder you keep it, the faster the production unless something has failed. I see a lot of heaters fail. You can test this. When the IM starts it cycle, test the voltage from L to H on the module, they will be marked. Should read 120V. The heater on the bottom of the mold should be getting hot. Disconnect the harnes and ohm it. Should ohm out at approx 72 ohms, same test points. If this checks good, check the center wheel on the module itself. Two clips keep the wheel in place. If one is cracked off, the IM will not fucntion properly. Other than colder temps, there is no way to adjust the speed of the cycle. Keep the flap in front of the ice-maker down so that the cold air is drawn across that IM. Catriver.

the water line to the ice maker is house in the refrigerator and if frozen

Check to make sure that the damper between the freezer and fridge is not broken or frozen open. Make sure that you shut off the water supply to the fridge until you get this fixed because the line could crack and then you could flood the house.

this is a hard one to diag in person, let alone via email. you know your not getting water to the ice maker, problem is finding out why, ther is (or should be) a tech sheet behind the kickplate of this unit with a little trouble shooter and diag procedure for the ice maker. folded little blue/and or brown paper.
1. is the water line leading from the valve to the ice maker fill clogged/frozen??? pulll the machine out and youll see the line leadding to the top corner of freezer, disconnect that line and try to blow though to the insde of freezer, should blow withno resistance. if so your good if not youll need to thaw that line

2. is the red light blinking on the inside of door. its a sensor for the ice maker if its faulty you wont get ice either. With the flapper on rt wall of freezer depressed the light should remain on solid, if continues to blink a pattern, 1 and 1 quick blinks, 1 and them 2 quick blinks, youll need to replce the electronics

3. is the water valve itself just not sending water to the ice maker. its a dual vavle 1/2 does water and the other half feeds the ice maker . generallly youll hear the valve being energized, just no water coming through

4. ice maker itself can be damaged and not calling for water at all.a pretty common issue with these electonic control ice makers is the center gear actually over torques itself and winds up snapping itself(at least the tabs that hold ino place snap anyway). gaining acess to the face of the ice maker will tell this.
while looking at the exposed from\nt of ice maker you should see the center gear adn the 2 tabs holding the gear on as well. ther shoud be a SMALL but definite space betwwen the 2 tabs in middle of center gear, as if it were pressed on and the tabs spread back open to hold onto the gear. if 1 of the tabs is cracked or the gear isnot mounted correctly because of the tabs, you best bet is to replace the ice maker assy
GOOD LUCK

Cannot remove plastic skids from under my new whirlpool fridge

Help I cannot remove the plastic skids from underneath my brand new whirlpool refrigerator. the skids (grey in color ) appear to be made to prevent execessive movement during shipping. I looked at the skids as closely as the fridge would allow for any set screws or any other thing that may lock these skids on

The skids are bolted to the refrigerator from underneath. I think they are 13mm or so, you need a friend to help you tilt the fridge and then unbolt them from the bottom.

sound of water dripping on something hot

Tonight we started hearing water dripping at a fairly high rate from our fridge. I opened up the freezer side and began to hear the sound of water sizzling, like the drips were falling on something hot. We have been in this rented home for 6 months and not heard it make this sound. It lasted for about 5 minutes. I pulled out the bottom drawer of the freezer side and looked to the back to see a metal plate behind a white plastic grid. This seemed to be where the water was dripping to, but when I felt the plate it did not feel hot. Can "cold on colder" make that sound? Any idea what the sizzling sound might be? Thanks.

don't worry about it. there is a defrost heater to melt ice off the evaporator when in defrost mode. happens about every eight hours. the sizzling noise is water dripping on the heater

BAD SMELL FROM OUTSIDE OF REFRIGERATOR

Lost all of my food in the freezer during Hurricane Ike. I believe some popsicles melted and ran down through the vent. There is a strong, sickly sweet smell coming from the outside of the refrigerator. It is not all of the time but when it happens, you can't stand to stay in the kitchen. Is there a way to get to a drip pan or something to fix this problem. HELP!!

Fridge keeps tripping the circuit breaker

I have a 13-year old Whirlpool ET20TK that tripped maybe 2x in a couple of years about 8 years ago. I replaced the circuit breaker back then and everything was fine, until mid-2008 when it tripped again. The fridge has since been tripping the breaker more frequently: Nov 2008, mid-Jan 2009, mid-Feb, and today, March 1st. The fridge is on the same circuit as the toaster/broiler and the microware. The tripping now happens even when there's no activity on those 2 appliances - though they're plugged in.

Should I replace the circuit breaker again or just replace the fridge? Please help! Thanks in advance!

Your fridge should draw no more than 5amp. Presuming your breaker is at least 15amp there's a problem. Move to a different circuit first. If the condition persists check the start relay on the compressor. I have a suspicion the circuit may have another item you are not aware of.

whirlpool ice dispenser not working, but water is

The ice maker works fine, but the door dispenser unit does nothing. No ice cubes and no crushed ice. It's like there's no electric connection. Is there a fuse? How do I get to where the switch is? The light bulb in the dispenser area also is out, but I don't know if that's related.

There are three common problems with icemakers:

There's no ice
Small or too few ice cubes
Specks in the cubes
Note: If your repair problem isn't listed, click here to email the RepairGuru. He will give you the help you need.

There's no ice If your ice maker has stopped producing ice completely, check these, in this order:

  • It may be turned off. Look for the wire along the right side of the ice maker that looks a bit like a coat hanger. If the wire is in the raised position, the ice maker is turned off. If so, try one of these:

    • If your ice maker has a small red plastic lever, lower it to lower the wire.

    • If there's no plastic lever, simply lower the wire.

In either case, the ice maker should begin producing ice again. Also make sure that the temperature is 8 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. If the freezer is too warm, the ice maker won't cycle properly.

  • The ice maker fill tube may be blocked with ice. If so, melt the blockage using a hair dryer-but be careful to not melt any plastic parts! Also replace the water shut-off valve or water-inlet valve, or both, if necessary.

  • The ice maker head assembly may have broken parts. Look to see if the gears are broken. Check to see if the small plastic arms that rest against the ice rake are broken. If the ice maker head assembly is modular and you've found broken parts, you can just replace it.

Small or too few ice cubes If the ice maker is producing ice poorly--making small cubes or too few cubes--you probably have a clogged water line, a defective water-inlet valve, or a defective ice maker mold thermostat that isn't cycling properly. Check these:

  • The water line that's attached to the back of the refrigerator. Make sure you have good water flow. If the flow is poor, repair, clean, or replace the tubing or the shut-off valve that supplies the water.

  • The water-inlet valve. Replace it if it has failed.

  • Check the freezer temperature. If should be 8 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. If the freezer is too warm, the ice maker won't cycle properly.

  • The ice maker mold thermostat. Make sure that it's cycling properly.

Specks in the cubes If you find black or gray specks in your ice cubes, have a look at the ice cube tray. If the protective coating is peeling away, the most economical solution is to completely replace the ice maker.

We had a brief power outage. After power was restored, everything worked on our Whirlpool Side by Side refrigerator. Water dispenser and ice dispenser still work. Ice making switch is on (down position). Checked for ice cube blockages after looking after the trouble shooting section of the owner's manual. What next? Thanks!
