Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 (M1227310) Hard Drive Questions & Answers
Error code 0X80070571 with the external HDD
The Seatools test has verified that the "physical" hardware is working fine, which is good news.
However, the error-message "disk structure is corrupted" means that there is a "logical" problem. Compare it to a book with a Table of Contents that has been overwritten by a two-year-old with crayons;
the pages are not physically torn nor missing, but you cannot "read" the original Table of Contents information.
Connect the drive, and note which drive-letter that Windows assigns, e.g., 'E:'.
Click Start
Click Run
Type CMD and press ENTER
Type CHKDSK E: /F and press ENTER,
and let Windows try to reconstruct the Table of Contents on the disk.

It depends on why you are formatting the drive? Getting rid of it or just "starting over"?
If you are just "starting over" you can try downloading one of the Disk Utility applications that Maxtor has (Seagate bought Maxtor so it's on the Seagate website - http://www.seagate.com) - I believe the "SeaTools" utility might have an option to format the drive - not sure if SeaTools is specific to Seagate drives or if there is a different app you'll need for a Maxtor. I'm not a Mac person but there also might be a way to format the drive from the Mac OS.
If you are getting rid of or recycling the drive and want to make sure that there is absolutely nothing left on the drive you can do 1 of 3 things:
- Look for a utility that will do a "low-level" format of the drive. SeaTools from Seagate (or a Maxtor-specific app if required)
- Use a "data shredding" application that not only deletes the data but also overwrites the sectors with zeroes.
- Get a really big magnet and rub it against the hard drive 5 or 6 times (no joke).

Worked yesterday / not working today
Someone else figured this out, but I've seen a lot of people with the
same problem. Hopefully this will help you with yours. This is for
WinXP and Windows Vista. It worked great for me.
*** THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY ***
1 - Disconnect the HD from USB and power supply.
2 - There are 2 screws at the back. Unscrew and open the box. (The plastic is kinda hard to open be careful)
3 - Now you have a metal box in your hands. Unscrew and open it.
4 - Now you will see a HD and a controller board. There are 3 screws that holds the controller board. Take them out.
5 - Now slide out the hard drive and controller board out gently.
6 - Unplug the controller board (power socket and IDE socket)from the Hard disk.
7 - Look at the back you will see jumper settings. (Mine was set on Cable Select.)
8 - Take the jumper out and plug it to Master ON position. now put it all back together.
Instruction manual
Hard drives dont need instructions. Connect it to your computer. Go to where you would format the drive ( like disk utility for the MAC ). Format it for the proper file system ( HFS,UFS,MS-DOS, NTFS...) That's it. Eject it always before you disconnect it, and treat it gentle like a baby. In the thousands of these that I've sold and repaired, they never came with instructions, just a cd with drivers for windows.
I could point you to this, because no matter who makes the drive, it's the same product, some are just made better, and some last longer. I would just stay away from plastic. rives spin anywhere from 4200-10,000 RPMs. That can generatesome heat even after 5 minutes.

Don't be fooled by slick looking hard drives. Your're gonna put some import stuff on that thing. If it fails due to poor quality like the infamous Lacie D2, that slick case means nothing when your drive is clicking its last death and being asked to pay 10 times the cost of that drive for starters to possibly recover it. I prefer seagate drives and wiebetech enclosures. Heavy duty, no non sense hardware, and I treat these things like they owe me.
FYI, seagate (the only American HD manufacturer and the best on the planet ) bought out Maxtor 2 yrs ago.

Re-connect the hdd to pc. Go into Device Manager and select Disk Management. If the HDD is displayed here, see what options are available prior to a re-Format. Hope this helps...
Damn windows wont detect it
Seagte purchased Maxtor in 2006. They kept the group that supported these products intact. Check Seagate's support site for specific information and/or contact Seagate's support group. They should be able to help you. The website is: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support...
As a last resort, you can get a free replacement from Seagate via their warranty repair group. They track via serial numbers, so no receipts should be needed.
