I dropped (about 9 inches) my Maxtor 500Gb external HD
Hi John, yes you are right. Your hard-disk is damaged due to the fall. And although your computer won't find it you may still be able to recover some information from the drive.
If running Windows, plug-in your drive and check the taskbar to see if the safely remove icon comes up. if it does then try one of the following:
1. Install and use a good partition recovery software to recover your entire partition to a safe location. I personally use EASEUS partition recovery.
2. Use a file recovery software like R-Studio to try and recover individual files
Note that either of these processes will take a while, so be patient and make sure you have lots of free space on your computer or on another external drive.

You mean you're trying to get past the user name and password on login? Sorry, if that's the case. You really need to call the support line for them. I doubt anyone here will help you break into a computer.

A partition label is just a way to give a name to a partition. Especially if you are putting more than one or two partitions into a hard drive. Creating partitions is like giving a hard drive different rooms to run or save different things in. similar to the rooms in a house.

It's just to give a hard drive partition a name. You don't have to because the computer will do it, but you can name a partition almost anything you want unless you go too far with namings.

Go to the seagate/Maxtor website and download the hard drive repair programs they offer for free. Also check to see how long your warranty lasts. They usually run for years.
