What is your operating system? Have you tried to force install this hardware? I need to know this before I can begin to troubleshoot.

Sounds like the drive could be bad. Clicking from the Hard Drive is never a good sign. While the Hard Drive itself is a sealed unit, the external case housing the drive is not. Most of these are universal connectors. You can try to remove the external casing and plug it directly into you system, but chances are that the drive is gone.

There are data recovery centers available that can try to recover the data for you but they can be relatively expensive. It just depends on how important the data is to you.

It sounds like your problem is in the power adapter. Youshould be able to hear and feel the drive spinning when you turn it onif the power supply was working. There are replacement cases availablethat you can put your drive in that should get it back online. Youshould be able to open the external case and remove the drive. If youhave a desktop PC available you should also be able to connect thedrive to one of the hard drive controllers in the PC and access yourdata that way. I had this problem and found that by holding down the shift key whilst re-connecting the drive solved it.......not permanently but it has worked on several occassions

If this can be done on DOS mode environment why not try it. Delete some unimportant fies so that it can free some spaces. Then try to view it again in windows environment if this helps.

Yes, it is wise to do a house cleaning on your Maxtor. Whether you delete everything or not is up to you. However, do not do this by formatting the hard drive.

If you find you need a file later you deleted from the drive, a free program called 'FileScavenger' can recover it for you. If you format the hard drive the ability to recover a file becomes highly unlikely.

We techs have expensive software to recover files should you need to get it retrieved, but the interface is designed for techs and not the average user.

My Maxtor 3100 did work with my XP widow machine at one time. But suddently my computer doesn't recognize the USB connection. How do I fix this?

Best Option is to replace with a 12v adapter cord

It might be possible for you to be able to fix the device but it may not be stable any longer. The best suggestion I can give is to send the unit over to a data recovery center such as the links below. I personally wouldnt risk trying to fix it with that much data on it. Id rather recover it first then think about fiddling with the unit.

I assume it is a USB connection? Does it also have a power adaptor or a USB dongle that has 2 USB connectors? If you cannot get it to power up, the only other option to retrieve your data is to take the HD out of the case and connect it to a PC or laptop using a SSD or SATA to USB adapter and see if you can get the PC to recognize it.

I doubt they are still available but usually one can be found on the maxtor web site, (many years ago).
