Your camera has a lens error. This is such a common fault that I hope you don't mind me pasting my stock generic answer below. No point in reinventing the wheel!

Stuck lenses are probably the most common reason that compact digital cameras get thrown away, but there's a fair chance of recovering use of your camera again

The fault is commonly caused by dirt or grit blocking the mechanism, or due to it having suffered a recent fall. Another common cause is that the camera was in a pocket or bag and the power button accidentally activated and tried to open the lens against resistance. The mechanism may have simply become dislodged or there may be parts which have broken.

If your camera is still under warranty and has definitely not been subject to misuse then contact the manufacturer's service department in your country to find out about a free repair. If the warranty has expired though a professional repair will far exceed the cost of replacing your camera. You will therefore have nothing to lose by trying to fix this yourself.

Please click here and you will be taken to an excellent article provided by the Camera Repair website. For the most part, you'll be guided on how to physically manipulate your camera to try and clear the fault.

If the link doesn't work then cut and paste the following address into your browser:-

Good luck, I hope you manage to use this information to fix your camera. Please take a moment to rate the free answer I have provided for you.

Lens error on coolpix 5700

Hello

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

You can also have a look at THIS link.

Hope the advise is useful. please do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance.

Regards
Andrea

When I turn it on,

Digital cameras focus with a lens attached to a circular, swiveling ring, controlled by small electromagnets. When dirt, dust, lint, or sand works its way into the lens assembly, the focusing ring can become jammed, not allowing the lens to swivel and focus. This, in turn, messes up other settings, which is why you're probably seeing a green haze. You can try to free up the lens by spraying compressed air into it, in hopes of dislodging the obstruction. Some people have reported banging the camera gently with the palm of the hand to free it up. Here is a web blog that talks about lens issues, and may help you:
http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
If this doesn't help, the camera will have to be serviced unless you're really handy with this kind of tedious repair.
Good luck, and hope this helps.

SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

How much compact flash memory can the 5700 support

The Nikon CoolPix 5700 can support up to 1 GB CF type memory cards, but only of a certain brand. Nikon maintains a list of approved cards - those brands and capacities that have been tested to work 100%. Other cards may work too - but no further testing of memory cards is being done with this model camera.

I hope this helps! Good luck!

How to download pictures from a nikon camera?

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Nikon ViewNX.

Your camera uses CF type I or II cards. Since it was first introduced in 2002 I believe it has no support for 4GB cards. But since it's a 5MB camera, you can get some 500 frames on one 2GB card. Just need to pack some more of those for a photo-safari.
