I HAVE AKAI PT50DL24XISMS IT COMES ON FOR 30SEC TO 1MIN THE PICTUREGOES OUT THE SOUND STAY ON THEN GOES OFF

Its a DLP that uses a lamp, lamp is possible but I would also look to see if fans are on and running, a fan stopping or even slowing down can trigger the set off also.Average lamp life is 2000 hours or two years and set if lamp a bit dim may shut set off.

In the customer menu first look for convergence--if this is Akai it is made by Samsung.in the convergence menu will be either a grid of lines or several crosses--examine and see if your red line is out of position there. If it is it may just require with the remote adjustment in that menu.Cleaning will not resolve a red line.let me know what you find.

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Below are more details for both items. Also, complete repair kits with instructions and repair support are avail from site such as www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

The convergence board has a +20V & -20V input.

Replace R858 and R859...They also go bad frequently when the STK chips fail.

If your TV looks 3D, warped, or distorted it likely has a convergenge problem.
If however it just looks dull, washed out, redish, greenish, or blueish or if it looks like objects on the screen have halos the fluid in the lens has soured.
You can search google for parts or you can get the parts with repair instructions from sites such as www.TvRepairKits.com

I have a pt5598hdix projection

Hi,

Ok, you probably have a failing convergence stage. This is very very common in older projection TVs like yours - maybe the #1 problem.

The TV has three color tubes in the lower half of the cabinet that project an image off the main mirror and onto the back of the screen. The convergence board processes the signals to the tubes and adjusts the light beams so that the red, blue and green images all line up. When the board fails, the light beams don't line up and you get the '3D' image with the separated colors and bowing near the edges.

The board has two main components called convergence amplifiers (some call them STKs or convergence ICs). They can fail. It is also common for some pico fuses or fusible resistors on the board to pop. If all three colors are off, then the STKs are probably bad. If only one color is off, then it could just be a pico fuse or other small component in the signal path.

You have three choices.

1. Some people have fixed the board themselves but it is not a job for a beginner. The parts are only about $70 but you need to know what you are doing. I can point you in the right direction but you need to have a good understanding of soldering and troubleshooting basic electronic components. You would need a DMM and soldering tools. Here is what is involved - it will give you an idea: http://cmpalmer.blogspot.com/2006/11/fixing-my-own-tv-part-ii.html

You can buy the kit for your TV here: www.tvrepairkits.com

2. You can try and find a rebuilt board. This would probably cost around $300 and you would need to pull the old one out and put the new one in.

3. You can have it professionally repaired. This would probably cost around $400-$550

I'm sorry it isn't the best news.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

My screen went blank but the sound works fine. We

all in one day my screen started by showing a u look at top and bottom. all three colors kind of separated from each other and therefore made shadows on all the writing and double and triple vision on people and images. then it drawed in from sides and showed some black. then it popped in the back and no picture. the sound then came back on with no picture. so i shut it off and unplugged it. what do i have to get to fix this? thank you, Robert Hopkins

Dark picture

the 3 tubes inside can have enough dust on them to make it dim. but with this set it is caused by age. you are better off to put you money in a new set.
