The camera says err on the top display. When I try to take a picture, sometimes it won't work at all (little soft click) and other times it makes a very strange, slow shutter sound and still won't take the picture. I took off the lens and the mirror seems to be flipped in an incorrect position. I tried different lenses and it had the same problem.
Today I was taking photos and the camera quit...the top display says err. The book says release shutter, but I push the shutter and it does nothing but make a little click and the err stays. I took the lens off, and the camera does look like the shutter is open or something.

the camera does everthing like its going to take the picture but it wont click the green led in bottom right comes on the "For" error message appears and when i hit the menu button the hour glass comes on and it takes a while to come and says card is not formated and i when i try formating it it says formating stays on for a while turns and nothing what can i do save me
If green LED is blinking constantly when camera is turned on, this is a known problem with D70. Upgrade camera firmware from nikonusa.com website.

I would like to know how to take a photo in self timer mode.
Ok, you need to hold down the multi frame button on the top left of the back of the camera, then turn the dial (front I think) till it shows the little clock timer on the screen. It will give you a 10 second timer.

Please can you tell me how to open RAW images in photoshop that are taken with my D70s Nikon. I have spent much time trying to do so and my photoshop CS will not recognize the format even though it is listed as an option in the "open with menu". Photoshop Help tells me that you can get plug ins but I cant find any leave alone one to do the above task - I find it all very confusing. I have now downloaded Picture Perfect which I have not used before and it is behaving very strangely - like opening images that were erased from the memory card some time ago - and will open only one of the RAW files on the memory card. I am also finding your web site difficiult as this is my second attempt to contact you the first being lost in the ether! Help would be much appreciated.
A Photoshop Raw file is a Photoshop PSD file without a header. The header
information must be entered when the file is imported into Photoshop. The
raw format is used import and export bitmap data using a very simple,
uncompressed binary format.

Nikon D70 digital cameraWhen our memory cards are inserted ''CHA'' comes up on the top sceen and ''memory card cannot be read'' on the larger display screen. Why is this? We have used these cards for 1-3 years and had no previous problems.
First read:
http://www.vandyll.net/?p=499
Then read how, with pics:

Careful now....

I tried charging the battery, but it still won't allow me to take a picture. It worked fine yesterday, but for some reason won't today. Any ideas as to what that error message means?
TIA !
This error indicates the following:
This card cannot be used (CHR) blinks.
Problem(s)
Error accessing memory card
Unable to create a new folder (on card)
Card has not been formatted for use on D70
Try another card
Format the card using your D70 (all images will be erased)
Check the card for visible damage or poor contacts.
You may have inserted a memory card that was been used in a different camera or the formatting process did not complete successfully.
I hope this helps.

I've got a Nikon D70s. (It's always set on auto.) The photos I take have always turned out a little darker than I would like (something I usually remedy in Photoshop), but over the past two days - since I last recharged the battery - all the photos I have taken have shown up COMPLETELY BLACK on the camera's screen. I mean, COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY BLACK. (And it's not because I'm leaving the lens cap on!)
What is going on with my camera? Is there anything I can do to fix this myself, before I have to resort to going to a camera shop? (I live in a rural area - camera shops are hours away!)
Thanks in advance for any help offered...
A lot can be happening. Try them one at a time. If the first does nothing, go to the next.
Let me know if we need to go further.

my nikon d90 won't turn on anymore. I charged the battery, tried pressing every button but it just won't turn on. What should I do?
Hello. Begin by removing the battery and using the eraser end of a common pencil to clean the contacts inside the battery compartment. Then reinstall the battery. If that does not solve the problem, take your camera to a radio shack store and ask them to test your battery. joe

nikon error code R19
R19 is NOT an error code. The "R<number>" is the number of pictures that may be taken (and stored on the camera's built-in, non-removable, high speed memory) before the camera must move the images to the removable memory card.
If you take a number of pictures in rapid succession, the R19 will decrease to R18, R17, R16 etc. If you shoot all the way to R1, you won't be able to shoot again until the camera is allowed to move the images to the removable memory card. If you don't take pictures in rapid fire mode - the R19 will probably not change as the camera is transferring between your shots.
I hope this was very helpful.
