Brother MFC-8460N network printing, local scanning
Yes this is possible. Depending on the type of installation that has been done on the computer, you can even scan documents to your computer as a network scanner.
You can check and see if all the features have been installed on your computer. Click on start, all programs, and look for the folder called brother. If you can find brother you can look for the sub category for Conrtrol Center. From Control Center you can scan by clicking on one of the icons. Like file or image.
If none of this is installed, get your installation disk and install the software, you can do a network installation or a Local (USB) installation.
If you decide to do a Local installtion remember to only plug in the USB cable when promted to.
If you decide to do a network installation, the machine should already be installed on the network, which I assume it is since its being used as a network Printer.
Please let me know if any of this info was usefull, and if you require more info about this.

You will need to use a cable to use the scanner.
Either a USB cable to connect directly to computer or an ethernet cable directly to router, then you will need to install the driver software.

Did you replace the toner cartridge or the imagine drum? My bet is you have only change the toner cartridge. The drum unit will require changing from time to time as well. It is likely that drum is worn out in that spot.

My MFC8460N Brother won't print. It makes this
Gears on the tray is broken, or the gears that lift the tray. (thus the clicking noise). And the no paper is due to the actuators underneath not being activated because of the non lift.

Trying to send a fax error: Poor line condition/
Make sure by making a copy that your scanner is OK, streaks or black bands won't send properly and you need a new scan assembly, Poor line condition is just that, you need a better line or cable, If you go to fax settings and turn off error correction mode it sometimes helps as well.

Factory reset a brother MFC-8460N printer mfp
Looks like <0> followed by <3> will let you input your fax number, phone number and company name. When you need letters instead of numbers experiment with the keypad. For example to input the letter "c" press the <2> three times. To input the letter "h" press the <4> key twice. You will get the hang of this easily.

Will not pick up paper. It makes a loud clicking
Check the tab at the end of the paper tray, needs to be right on the arrow for your paper size, too tight won't allow picking up paper. If OK, take out paper tray and set on a table, the gear closest to the table has a flat area that needs to be level with the bottom of the tray or the table. If slanted up you need to bend the paper lifter bar under the front edge of the paper so that the gear is level again.

Ghostly effect
If drum is a genuine Brother, then open the rear door and look at the fuser rollers, if you see toner or partial images on the rollers you need a new fuser, if the fuser is clean, look at the drum surface and if you see parts of last print then the drum is bad. In reports, print the user options list it will give the total print count. The fuser is worn out around 80 to 100,000 prints.
