Inside the back door is a black plastic guide, in the center there's a lever that moves when paper goes thru, on the right is a flag that needs to be in between the horseshoe shaped sensor on the right. Make sure the lever moves freely...

When pressing the 'scan' button

It sounds as though you have not installed the scanner software. Reinsert the cd that came with the printer and install the scanner software. If you have already done this then go into the pc's control panel and look under scanners or in windows 7 under hardware and imaging devices. the scanner should be listed there. If it is not then download the brother uninstall tool to remove it from your system. restart and reinstall and all should be well.

We have a Brother MFC 7420. Printing now give long

That's usually a bad cartridge, but can be from the wire not being cleaned by the slider, or a worn drum. If it's close to time for the drum to be replaced, I'd start there. The number of pages between drum changes is not a hard rule, but a generality. Drum wear depends on paper used, humidity, OEM or remanned cartridges, total page coverage, etc...

Fax automaticaly daling #365 etc

Found this here...

(For MFC-7420)
When you turn off the MFC's power switch its memory will be cleared. To check
whether the MFC has faxes in its memory see Checking if the MFC has faxes in
its memory on page 11-5. If there are faxes you need to save them before following
the suggestions below (See Transferring faxes to your PC on page 11-5 or
Forwarding faxes to another fax machine on page 11-5).
Turn off the MFC's power switch and then turn it on again. If the error message
continues, leave the MFC for several minutes and try it again.
Check the settings in your application software to make sure it is set up to work
with your MFC.

(For MFC-7820N)
Turn off the MFC's power switch and then turn it on again. If the error message
continues leave the MFC for several minutes and then try it again. (The MFC can
be turned off for up to 4 days without losing faxes stored in the memory.)

Looking through this manual, this is the only solution that I could find. There are options on the 7820N model in the menus that will allow you to reset the printer itself, and i quick search through the above link for "printer reset" should bring you to the menu selections for that.

I have a paper jam

Don't try to remove the drum by itself while it's still in the machine,
just simply remove the drum and toner cartridge together.

There is no lock you should just be able to pull the cartridge out.

Black vertical line appears on

Hi,

This issues looking printer head problem. check the following Steps for cleaning printer head :

Click on the Start button if you have Windows XP. If you have Windows Vista, click the Windows icon that resides in the lower left corner of your computer screen.

Click on "Control Panel," then "Printers and Other Hardware." Finally click on "View Installed Printers or Fax Printers."

Right-click on the name of your printer and choose "Printing Preferences." This should open a new window; next look for a tab or button marked Maintenance, or something similar.

Find the button that says "Print heads" or "Clean the Print heads" and click on it. You may be asked to choose which print heads; choose them all if you are. Make sure there is paper and ink in your printer, and that it is turned on ahead of time.

Take out the page your printer has printed and see if there are any grids or boxes missing. If there aren't, then you can just exit the program--your print heads are not clogged. If there are grids missing, then click on the "Cleaning" or similarly worded button.

Once the cleaning process has completed, print another page to be sure that your print heads are no longer clogged. If they are still clogged, repeat Steps 1-5 until your printer is printing clearly.

There is ink inside the area where the paper is

Remove the toner/drum unit and vacuum the spilled toner dust up. Get a torch and make sure to vacuum all of toner dust in paper path. Also check the drum & toner unit to see if there is a spillage coming from them.
