My Sony Handycam DCR-SR40 is sometimes recording

Sounds like your main sensor chip is on the way out. There's really not a fix for it as I'm sure the part is not available. Even if the part were available this model is usually all over eBay for really low prices. Much cheaper to just pick up another one for $50 or so. One tip - Sony is one of those companies that put out a great product initially then gradually offers "newer" versions that are no where near the quality and performance of the initial release. I'm talking consumer stuff here, not commercial. There's a difference. The initial release for this Sony line was the DCR-SR100. Even though it has the smallest hard drive of the series it will out perform them all because of the larger sensor chip. Low light level recording (think concerts, etc) is much better than the others in this series. Plug a Sony ECM-HST1 into the hotshoe and you have a setup that records great video and NO Distortion audio at concert or club/bar sound level shows. I have 3 of these camera setups I use to video our band gigs with great results. Only drawback is, like most video cameras, the autofocus uses infrared light for it's distance/focus measurement. If the stage lights have a lot of red your focus will not be as good. Go to youtube and search for DeafMonkeyStudio to view some videos we've done over the last several years. You can usually pick up this model camera for about $100 on eBay so don't go for the ones that always say $289. Sorry to stray so far away from your original problem.
