The play button does not

If the tape has been used many times to record try a new tape.
Maybe the tape has been exposed to a magnetic source like a speaker that is not shielded.

Yes, these units in particular have a common problem with the CCD sensors. It is not exactly an inexpensive repair, and if you had to pay for it yourself, would probably exceed the value of the camera. Contact Canon support as they may replace the CCD for free or under a special warranty, since the problem was so pervasive. If Canon won't replace it for you, you probably need to look into a new camcorder.

I bought a 2gb sd

Check the SD card, it should have a small slide switch on the side, it should be in the up position (unlock), up meaning towards the end with the gold contacts. If it is in the down position, the card can not be written to.
