open gas cap and see if it will run again. m,any times the gas tank vents clog and the engine can't draw gas after a few minutes. another thought is the oil mixture.. 50:1 with oil made for air cooled engines....not boat engine oil

First try this... put some 30 weight oil in the plug hole aso much as you can until it reaches top of plug hole. Let it sit there a few days allowing the oil to creep between the walls and piston. .. then try turning the flywheel with a socket and ratchet, a little forward, a little the opposite...


Now, if that doesn't work, it depends on your unit... if we are talking about a $400 top model back packer, then it would be worth getting it repaired... you would be paying between 150 and 200... if the unit costarts 300 or less than buy a new one... period

Kill switch most likely has broken wire between switch and engine. When in "kill" position, it should connect the top of the sparkplug to the rest of the engine. If it doesn't, either the switch is bad or the wire is.

Internal or external snap rings usually require a special pair of pliers to remove. In absence, you might try a very pointed pair of needle nose pliers or even a pair of dental tools or similar. Once the ring begins to dislodge from its groove you should be able to work it out. Reinstallation might require the specific tool.

With todays gasoline it turns to what is called varnish very rapidly and more than likely some of the fuel that set in the carb over those 6 months has turned into a gummy varnish so the carb probably needs cleaned, If it is not to bad you can probably adjust the carb with the air/fuel mixture screws and keep it running well till end of the season, shouldn't take more than 1/8 to 1/4 turn though. Likely there is air trapped in the system. Try raising drive wheels (safely) off the ground and operating forwards backwards. With minimal load on the hydo pump and motor, the air should purge.

The flywheel key has likely sheared. Contemporary utility 2-cycle flywheel keys are integrated into the flywheel. A new flywheel will be likely be required.

Question edited for clarity and typo botton to bottom. It should be at the top of the stroke. It is called TDC or Top Dead Centre and is then the spark ignites the fuel and air to force the rotation onwards in the same rotation as travel.

The problem is that the engine is a funny size at 40cc. If it was 50cc, you could get away with motorcycle rings. The normal way to size rings is by measuring the bore with an inside micrometer across left to right and then again front to back. The front to back measurement is often a little more worn. Then you order rings by diameter and thickness, Any local engineering company can do this and supply you with generic rings. There is a different model here with rings at $25 but Jack's Small Engines is $57. My advice is get the OEM ones. You will also need to hone the bore lightly to dull the polish.
