If you could provide me the product No. which is at the bottom sticker of the notebook of your Compaq v4000 laptop then I can find the part no. for LCD screen which is less costlier and exchangeable.

Tturn on your computer, then, before the windows boot screen appears, press the F8 key, this should bring up the start options , if it does not, turn off , turn back on and try again.
On the start options use the up/down arrows on keyboard to select "last known good configuration", press the enter key. Windows should start as normal if it does not do the process again but instead select "safemode" .

First check if it is getting proper power. When you turn on the computer, do you see a blinking light on the Drive. Kindly check if the device is found in the BIOS, If it is not detected in the BIOS possibly check the data cable. If you have more than 1 drive make sure the jumper settings are correct.

If you mean you hooked up an external monitor and you want to see the display there. Well there should be a Fn key combo to toggle the displays. It should be one of the keys that looks like a monitor plus the Fn key at the same time. Otherwise go into the Control Panel -> Display -> Settings and you can switch to the other monitor there.
