My HP Pavilion zd8000 keeps shutting down. It
Hi There,
Let's start with the easy (and hopefully the successfull) fix.
1. Over time, laptops get dust built up in the exit port that the fan pushes the air out of and the fan can get dust build up on the blades as well. So, find s buddy with an air compressor and have them set the regulator to no more than 40 psi and blow out the dust from your computer from every nook and cranny you can get to.
2. Go to Hp Support, then to their drivers and downloads section for your laptop and check for the latest BIOS download. DOwnload that by saving to your desktop and then install it from there.
3. If the above 2 steps do not solve the overheating, then the next step is to disassemble the laptop to the point you (or a techie) can remove the heatsink from on top of the processor and video card and clean off the old thermal grease which will be caked and dried up and put new grease in to help the laptop stay much cooler.
4. If all three of these steps do not work, it means that over time your video card has become stressed and is slowly starting to wear out and you'll probably want to be considering a newer machine.

Screen shows a bunch of "static"-- dots on screen.
Likely a issue with the video card. If those dots appear as the laptop is first turning on then for sure it is hardware related. If the boot up sequence is fine but windows displays dots it is a software issue that can be resolved by updating the driver or booting into safe mode. If hardware please contact the manufacturer. -Ravi Shanghavi

Well it should last between 3-4 hours if new.

Batteries need conditioned . You fully charge them and then run them fully down. 1 hour seems pretty short. As a rule, don't run them on battery while plugged into power.

I have no better solution than this.
From the images I seen on google it looks like the SD reader is on the right side of the laptop in front of the express slot. There most likely is a plastic insert that if u push it in will pop out. Its only a dust cover from the factory.

This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with Windows Vista.
Understanding battery charging issues
If
the notebook battery is not charging or the notebook does not indicate
that the battery is charging, the most likely scenario is that the
battery itself is operating correctly, but its power management
software may have become corrupt. In order to correct the problem, you
will need to uninstall and reinstall the power management software by
using the Device Manager. This document will explain how to uninstall
and reinstall the ACPI Battery listings in Windows Vista, as well as
how to obtain and install updated BIOS files, if needed to correct
other battery issues.
Uninstalling and reinstalling power management software in Windows Vista
