Resetting the Printer to Factory Default

Settings

Resetting the printer to factory default settings can be useful when

you are troubleshooting with the printer.

CAUTION Resetting factory defaults clears the page buffer, removes downloaded

fonts and macros, and returns all print menu settings to factory defaults.

To reset the printer to factory default settings

1 Press MENU until RESETS MENU displays.

2 Press ITEM until RESTORE FACTORY SETTINGS displays.

3 Press SELECT until the following message appears:

RESTORING

FACTORY SETTINGS

This message displays until the printer has completed the initialization

I'm guessing that you are using the ADF(automatic document feeder). Lift the scanner assembly up. Look for the narrow glass strip. Look at it closely. Look for dirt, dust, dead insect whatever. Get a lint free cloth and try a little glass cleaner. Rub it clean. Happy scanning

Windows 98, XP. My Windows 8.1 install lists a driver so likely Windows 7 will as well. You can always try the HP Universal Print Driver is nothing else works.

try to reboot

1. unplug the power cord
2. hold buttons '#' and '6' as you plug it back on
3. while still holding, power on the printer
4. after a few seconds, it will show semi NVM reset or something like that, and start the factory default setup (pick language, align cartridges, etc.)

There could be a couple of reasons,
1. incorrect phone number
a. Unplug the fax line from the wall jack and plug in a regular telephone.
b. From another phone call the phone that you just installed.
c. If it rings, the number is correct.
2. Could be bad phone wire from wall to fax
3. Could be bad fax card in printer.
4. Did it ever work?

Selecting the display language
To change the display language on the printer control panel, do the
following:
1 Press and hold [SELECT] on the printer control panel while pressing
the standby button (power switch). Continue holding [SELECT] until
the control panel displays
SELECT LANGUAGE (in English), and then release the [SELECT] key.
2 When the control panel displays LANGUAGE=ENGLISH *, press
[VALUE] repeatedly until your language choice appears.
3 Press [SELECT] to save your language choice. An asterisk appears
next to the selected language. Then press [GO].
4 After the printer warms up, the control panel displays READY in the
selected language.
Note
If the control panel does not display the message in the language you
selected, press the printer standby button and repeat the instructions for
changing the display language.

Using the HP Network Diagnostic Utility in Windows - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

Hi Steve,

a middle aged HP CLJ 4500; a middle drawer (transfer area) paper jam, unusually involving about 6 sheets; once the paper was removed, the transfer roller was found to be dislodged at the left end; after refit, the drawer will not close by about 1.5" (but closes fine with transfer assembly in place). I cannot see the interference. I found three references to the identical problem last night, but no answers.
I have (and have fitted) a new transfer kit, including new roller; no change.

This is usually the Transfer kit, but if the image drum or one of the power supplies goes bad, that can also give blank pages. The Drum problem for no print is usually a grounding/connection problem. Power Supplies are a complicated repair, but these printers aren't too bad to work on. You can buy good used one's fairly cheap on ebay, though. Should consider going to a later model CLJ if you replace with a used, though.

A critical firmware error has occurred that caused the processor on the formatter to abort the operation.

This type of error can be caused by invalid print commands, corrupt data, or invalid operations.

In some instances, electrical noise in the cable can corrupt data during transmission to the printer.

Other causes include poor quality parallel cables, poor connections, or specific software programs.

99 % of time it is a corrupt file or poor connection, I have also known it to be the firmware, dimm or formatter board on rare occasions.

Recommend check hp web for any firmware updates, check connections and that driver is installed impecablly and use known good files to test.

Troubleshoot the wired network connection Make sure you are using an undamaged Ethernet cable, check for a green light near the Ethernet port on the printer, and then print a report to verify the connection. Turn off the printer, and then disconnect the Ethernet cable from the router and the printer. Check the cable for damage, and then verify that it is an Ethernet cable and not a phone cable. NOTE: Ethernet and phone cables look similar, but Ethernet cables are usually bigger and have eight visible wires on the connector. Uninstall and reinstall with the latest software from http://support.hp.com for your OS. That should repair any connections that have broken.
