4240n will not print when hooked up to the network
Might be on board network port faulty. Two ways infront of you.
1. Need to replace Formatter assembly
2. Add Zetdirect card(Network card).
Replacing the formatter is costly affair, better go for zetdirect card 615N or 620N..Add on card provision available in this series.

Put paper in the manual feed tray.
Print. When the page gets half way into the printer, open the cover. Remove the toner.
Look down at the paper. Is the right side lighter than the left?
If yes, replace the toner cartridge.
I don't believe that a fuser could cause your problem.
I have very bad print
Most likely this is being caused by the fuser. More specifically the fuser film. The fuser is the part that gets hot and "fuses" the toner onto the paper. When the film, which is a non-stick material starts to go bad a small amount of the toner "sticks" to the film and is then re-applied to the paper in a much lighter form a couple of inches down the page. Depending on what your local service options are you can have someone come out and install a new fuser film onto your existing fuser unit. This is the solution I use most for my customers. The cost is around $150 to $180 for parts and labor. A new fuser, which you could install yourself is around $225 to $250 depending on your sources. You can order these online pretty reasonable. Just do a search for HP 4240 fuser unit.
Since you have already tried the toner cartridge then 95% sure the problem is in the fuser.
Good Luck and Thank You for using Fixya.
