While printing from the USB Port sometimes slow printout/data transfer will result in slow printing of print jobs. or The printer might be printing slow , pausing in between print jobs , or intermittent printing. The symptom solution is mention below, read and follow the instruction.

Solution 1

After the printer is installed on the USB Port, check the description under the Ports Tab what is selected. Please refer to the figure below : Using the USB/ Virtual Printer Port and DOT4/ HP Laserjet 2420, under the Port/Description Tab printer speed will be as per the standard. Whereas using the DOT4/ Generic IEEE 1284 under Port/Description Tab, Printer speed will be very slow. If DOT4/ Generic IEEE 1284 is selected by default, then you have to uninstall the USB driver from the Device manager and plug in the USB cable again. Then it will detect the printer and USB port with respect to the printer model. Insert the Driver CD as prompted and by default it will select the DOT4 HP LaserJet2420 Port.

Solution 2

1. Insert the HP LaserJet 2400 print series CD-ROM.
   NOTE: If the HP Software does not automatically start, click Start , Run , and then Browse . Browse to the CD-ROM drive at the top of the window under look in and select Setup.exe .
2. Select Modify Installation . Figure 1: Modify Installation
   NOTE: If Modify Installation is not available See Modify Installation is not Available.
3. Select the Language of your choice. Figure 2: Select Language
4. Click Next. Figure 3: Setup Wizard
5. Verify Reinstalling an existing printer is selected. Under Select the port for this printer , choose USB001 or Dot4_00x and click Next . Figure 4: Choose Port
6. Select desired Features and click Next . Figure 5: Select Next
7. Click Finish . Figure 6: Select Finish

Uninstall options

• First verify if an uninstall options is available. If an uninstall option is available under Start, Programs, HP LaserJet 2410 2420 2430 , use this method to uninstall the printer.

You will need to download the correct driver for your OS from this HP website. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=412129&taskId=135&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=416419&lang=en&cc=us
Install the driver and plug the printer back in. It will now find the new driver and will have all the support files as well.
If you continue to have issues, temporarily disable your viruses scanner while you install the driver. The drivers from HP's website contain no viruses so your scanner may give a false positive if it tries to remove any files while installing.

Run a "half test". Put paper in the manual feed tray(tray 1). Print anything. Watch the paper. When it gets about 1/2 way into the printer, open the top cover. Remove the toner. Look down at the paper. Do you see the "usual" line? If yes, replace the toner cartridge. If no the fuser is probably bad.

1. Press CANCEL JOB to clear the print job from the printer memory.
2. Turn the printer off, and then turn the printer on again.
3. Go to http:www.hp.com/
support/lj2420.
Click Download Drivers and Software. Check for the latest firmware image version at the bottom of the page. If this firmware image is newer than the one installed on the printer and the printer can receive a firmware update, download the newer firmware upgrade. Not all printer models can receive firmware upgrades.
4. Try printing a job from a different software program. If the job prints, go back to the first program and try printing a different file. If the message appears only with a certain software program or print job, contact the software vendor for assistance.

If your printer does not have a duplex unit then the printercannot print double sided pages automatically.
You can print double sided pages but you have to do it one page at a time.

If you have any additional memory installed in the printer, remove it and then try to start the printer. Your issue sounds like a bad formatter but you will want to try performing a cold reset before you jump to that conclusion. To cold reset, turn the printer off, turn the printer on and/if the memory count starts, press and hold the checkmark button until all lights turn on. Release the check mark and then use the up and down arrow keys until the display reads "cold reset" then press the check mark again. If the memory count does not start at all them it is very possible that the formatter or the engine control board is dead. Remove the formatter cover and near the front of the printer on that side you should see a little hole, this is the engine test button. If the printer will print an engine test then it is a bad formatter for sure. You may need to remove the formatter (the main board on the right side of the printer) in order to perform an engine test.

1. The cartridge toner (q6511A or X) is damaged.
2. The smart chip on the toner cartridge doesn't work.
   

You take your chances with any non HP cartridges. Especially when they are refilled. If it came with a warranty...use it.

Some of these cartridges ship with a pull strip that keeps the toner from running out during shipping. Remove the cartridge and check on both sides to see if there is anything hanging out. If not, the cartridge might have a bad PCR. If the printer worked before putting the new cartridge in, it is likely the cartridge that has a problem and any reputable vendor should replace it. If you still have the old cartridge, try printing with it again.

8. Remember to reconnect all of
the cables that connect the
printer to the network or

9. If this error message persists,
replace the firmware DIMM.
