CD drive not working

Based on your indication the CD drive is clean, and you know the cables are attached to it, inside the computer. (Flat ribbon IDE interface cable, and 4-pin Molex connector power cable)

1.Go to Device Manager

Left-click on Start. Right-click on My Computer. Go down, and Left-click on Properties. Left-click on the Hardware tab. Go down, and Left-click on Device Manager.

Left-click on the + sign to the left of, DVD/CD-ROM drives.
Right-click right on the name of the CD drive.

(Example: Lite On DVDRW LH-20A1P.
eMachines Support indicates the T5212 has a DVD burner drive, and a CD drive. Right-click on the CD drive name))

In the drop down list, Left-click on Properties.
Left-click on the Driver tab
Go below, and Left-click on the Update Driver 'button'. Now go below, and Left-click on OK.

Close all windows, go back to your desktop screen.
Shut your computer down normally. (Start>Turn Off Computer>Shut Down)

Do Not Restart. We need a 'Hard Shut Down'.
Wait 1 minute, turn your computer on.

Still doesn't work?
Let's play hard ball.

2.Go back to Device Manager. Left-click on the + sign to the left of DVD/CD-ROM drives. Right-click on the name of the CD drive. Left-click on Properties. Left-click on the Driver tab.
This time go down, and Left-click on the Uninstall 'button'. Go below, and Left-click on OK

There will be a Microsoft 'squawk box' that comes up. "Warning you are about to uninstall this device"
Left-click on OK. (It IS okay!)

Close all windows. Shut down your computer normally. (Again, we need a 'Hard Shut Down'. To Restart a computer is known as a 'Soft Shut Down')

Wait 1 minute. Turn your computer on.
After Windows loads all the way, and all of your Start Menu programs have loaded, you should see a pop-up out of your system tray. (Bottom of Windows desktop screen)

"Found New Hardware", and perhaps another one, "Found XYZ CD drive". (XYZ = the CD drive name)

No still?

The driver for your CD drive, is located within the Windows XP operating system on your computer.
If your CD drive does not work now, I suggest it has failed.

Drives such as Optical drives, and Harddrives, are mechanical devices. Their 'Lifespan', is rated in so many hours of usage. Your CD drive may be at the end of it's 'Lifespan'.

My cd-rom wont work

The laser lens needs cleaning.
Radio Shack has a CD laser lens cleaner ($13).
It is an audio CD with a row of brushes on it.
Read and follow directions. It does not use chemicals and will not harm your CD drive if not done correctly.

I have a sony vaio,

Hi try taking the drive out of the laptop, you may have to unscrew some screws under the drive first .Make sure you have the laptop turned off when doing this. When you have the drive out put it back in firmly then put the screws back in.This may sound stupid but sometimes this is all it takes.

Cd drive

Try having your cd drive cleaned. A cd drive could prevent the cd drive to read the disk properly. The drive noise is normal if the speed of your cd drive is high. Here are some links on how to clean a cd drive:

My laptop has limited internet access. I've called

Hello - Depending upon where (in your home?) you use your Sony Vaio laptop (via WiFi?) you may need a WiFi booster or extender. Or, you may find that moving your WiFi router to another location in your home will improve your connection without diminishing the connections for other laptops used in your home. Perhaps the information here will prove instructive: https://www.repeaterstore.com/pages/wifi-booster-repeater-extender-differences Note: If the router needs to be moved in your home, you will probably need a technician for your Internet provider to come to your home to relocate it and connect it properly.

Apple mobile device usb drivers has malfunctioned and exceed the power limits of its hub port.

Ewwwwwww... no fun. You should try a "POWERED" 4 Port USB 3.0 Hub It's important that it's a "POWERED HUB" because you need the HUB to supply it's OWN power and not depend on your Apple E to provide power to your connected USB devices! The good news is they don't cost much: $8 on eBay Auction: 202096902632 Note that they include the power supply! Many other HUBS don't. Your HUB is even LESS if you pick on the USB 2.0. Version, AND YES, each HUB MUST have it's own power supply and that's just what YOU need. The ONE thing I didn't like about this HUB is the LED lights that are provided for each port! They are TOO bright so I opened it up and plucked all but one LED out. I also bought the 8 and 10 Port HUB versions and 'fixed' them too. I also didn't need the switches to confuse things (accidentally turn one or more ports OFF)... so my trusty hot glue gun fixed that! All are constant ON now. Gotcha... it MAY be a internal ribbon cable to your screen is loose (or not seated 100%) OR sometimes a cable one conductor inside the cable breaks and acts like a switch ~ providing a OK display sometimes ~ or not. A PC repair shop will take a quick look for you for X-Bux and IF it is a loose connector/ribbon cable they MAY be able to fix it for you on the spot... A decent camera repair shop may be a answer for you too? They are very familiar with tiny screws and display repairs. Be careful though and don't spend too much... I would not recommend you open it yourself because sometimes things go "boing" and tiny things go flying. Anthony

You can remove or change the Window's User or administrator's password. You need access to a computer with Internet access to download the Hiren's Boot CD and burn it onto a CD. Then insert this CD into the laptop/computer and boot up the laptop/computer with the Hiren's CD and follow the instructions. There are very useful utilities CD and it a Linux boot CD which contains quite a lot of Utility programs including a password removal program.
