Depending on how old the mixer is, I would check the belts (if it is belt driven) to the planetary gears. If it is not belt driven, it sounds as if the motor is faulting out. I would replace the motor brushes first before spending money for a new motor. This may not be an intelligent question but I have to ask, are you overloading the mixer? A 12 quart mixer will do fine with cake batter but when you mix pizza or bagel dough, the moisture content is much less and it is equivalent to cement.
