20 Most Recent Roper RAS8445KQ Top Load Washer - Page 9 Questions & Answers

If this is a Whirlpool manufactured TOP LOADER (such as Kenmore, Roper, Estate and certain late model Maytags), the most common cause of a washer that fails to advance to the spin cycle is a lid switch malfunction or lid strike (actuator) problem. Symptoms may include, filling and stopping on the initial fill cycle, stopping right after the wash cycle, not advancing to rinse or spin cycles, and a wash tub that may not drain.

The lid switch is usually mounted under the washer top casing, on the right hand side on most top load models. It is activated by a plastic piece on the lid (called a "Lid Strike" or "Actuator") through a small hole on the rim of the wash tub opening. In many cases the lid strike breaks off the lid, or the lid switch becomes loose and no longer makes contact. Inspect the lid to make sure the lid strike is still intact, and then inspect the mounting screws (adjacent to the small opening on the wash tub rim) and make sure they are tight. Sometimes these screws will loosen, causing the lid switch make intermittent contact. If you determine the switch to be defective, the following link explains how to replace one:

https://www.fixya.com/support/r3557193-replacing_a_lid_switch

On some models, the lid switch is located under the top casing by one of the lid hinges. You will know if you if you have this type of switch, because it does NOT have a lid strike (actuator) and the small hole on the right hand side of the wash tub will not be present. This type of switch is actuated (toggled) by a rod on the lid hinge. With this type of switch, if you locate it and it can be toggled by hand, you may only need to adjust the actuator rod by bending it slightly.

NOTE: You do not have to drain or bail the water from the washer tub to perform this repair. Once a defective lid switch is replaced, the washer should drain normally.

Replacement parts (if required) can be purchased at any of the following web sites:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

The first three sites on the list, include helpful exploded view parts illustrations to assist you with locating and properly identifying any parts you may need. The lid switch and associated components are usually listed under the "Top and Cabinet" parts listing.

NOTE: Banging or slamming the lid can actually cause more harm than good. These switches are fragile and can break easily in this manner.

The average price of a replacement lid switch is about $20 - $30 if you perform the repair yourself. The lid strike (if equipped) usually costs less than $5. Prices will vary between sites so shop and compare. If the model number is correct, the part number for a replacment lid switch is 3949247.
If you have questions, or need additional assistance, please post back and let me know. This is a very simple repair that you can easily perform without the assistance of a repairman.

If you have any questions, please post back with your MODEL NUMBER (located on a nameplate along the wash tub rim under the lid) and let me know. I hope this helps you.

NOTE: If this advice does not help you enough, repairclinic.com has a Repair Manual you can order to assist you with all your repairs. The part number is 1170635 and is priced at about $20.

Searspartsdirect.com also has a repair manual for about the same price. Part number 4314044L. I hope this information is helpful to you.

it may be the the drive belt or the gearbox for the agitator. check the drive belt first.

This machine doesn't have a belt. Instead it uses a motor coupling. A very common problem, that occurs when one overload it.

it sounds like the hoses are hooked up backwards ... if you are certain they are correct and have swapped just to confirm then i would say the water valve has failed and your cold water side is not pening properly...before buying a new one gain access to rear of unit which will require taking 2 screws out of each corner of front side of console...flip console over and you will see a clip on each side metal usually copper color you can take a screwdriver and pop clips out..the entire cabinet now will pull away from tub portion...there are a couple minor things to be disconnect...molex plug to lid switch which you should see up top... the water valve is located on the back panel make sure the power is still connected to water valve there should be 2 seperate molex plugs to water valve....good luck to you...

remove the pump and check the drain lines for blockages do a bench test by taking a extension cord cutting off the end and putting some connectors on it then remove the pump from the machine and plug connectors onto terminal ends for pump and other side to wall outlet this will show if the pump is spinning properly if you need to know how to get at the pump look at this video this is not the same pump as yours but gives you the general idea http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwV71h86Gxw if you have any further questions please message me back thanks again Rick

First, always check for the obvious causes, if you haven't already, we all tend to overlook these.

1. Are water valves open, and if so is there water.

2. Check hose filter screens for plugging, or hoses themselves,

After these possible causes have been ruled out, check machine's inlet for both hot and cold taps for blockage, other wise you most likely have a bad fill valve, which are fairly cheap and simple to replace. If you have hard water, this is your best bet. These valves have two solenoids, one each for hot and cold, one or the other will energize when the temperature selector switch is selected for hot wash or cold wash, if warm wash is selected both solenoids energize to allow both hot and cold water to enter the machine and mix to warm.

Hope this helps

If the timer advances normally thru the spin and drain steps of the cycle you selected, than the problem that would cause neither spinning or draining, is the wash motor is not reversing. The motors is a two direction motor. It spins clockwise for normal agitation, but counterclockwise to engage the wash drum clutch and operate the drain pump. I would ask you to check for motor sounds at all during the spin and drain cycles. The pump reversing in the spin or drain cycles can be a function of the machine's lid safety switch, or if not the motor switch or timer contacts. The lid switch is first thing to check here, for sure! If the machine seems to stop running when it comes time to drain or spin, the lid switch is your best bet!

Hope this helps.

This sounds like the same problem as the post before yours! My answer to that one was as follows:

The most common cause for this problem is a faulty lid switch! this the switch that gets depressed by the tang on the machine lid. If the switch is problematic, or faulty, the washer will only fill and that is it! The timer will not advance or the motor run. The switch can be checked with an ohmmeter, and they are fairly simple to replace. If any further information regarding machine disassembly and switch replacement is needed, feel free to post here again.

Hope this gives you a starting point.

If it looks like the water overflowed then it could be a bad pressure switch the way to test it out is just fill it with water and set the washer on small load if it continues to put in water past the small load setting then you have a bad pressure switch

could be a couple things first thing to check would be the drive couple if you can hear the motor running this is usually the first thing to go because in the factorys they purposely install this piece as 100 percent plastic and it should only last about 2 years from the factory date its the piece that connects you motor to the trasmission please write back with your model and model numer and check the drive couple first and get back to me please remember to rank how this opinion has helped in your appliance situation and if i can answer any further questions please write me back thanks again

afew things it could be... first i would check the lid switch if the lid switch has failed it will not allow it to spin or drain... if the lid switch is good check under unit by tilting back if this is a direct drive unit which i believe it is it will have a drive coupling in it between the transmission and motor. this is what turns pump assembly and tub and if broke it will not work... if you start unit do you hear anything like it is trying to run just not turning if so then most likely going to be drive coupling it is located between transmission and motor plastic piece with a black piece of rubber between the two plastic pieces there are 3 prongs on each piece of the coupling and they shear when unit has gotten in a bind, heavy load or just after age... if you are not hearing anything when u turn on washer the check lid switch repost with anymore questions

Roper RAS8445KQ... | Answered on Jan 08, 2011

if it is not going through any of the cycles then you most likely have a bad timer assembly... if it fills with water but then won't wash, spin or drain even when you put it to the setting on timer...check your lid switch most likely bad. you can unplug unit and by-pass to test. take a jumper wire and jump the two terminals of the plug out usually the two outside terminals plug back in and see if it works then if so you know you got a bad lid switch... they put these on as a safety feature so when you raise the lid it kills the operation of unit during any moving parts
