sounds like it needs a new battery.

If you unplug the unit and it powers your PC for 3 or 4 hours then turns off, it is because the batteries are empty and this is normal. If it is plugged-in with power and shuts itself off after a few hours, then the battery cells may be in need of replacing. After 3 years, i would by a new UPS...

The battery will have to be changed if you want to keep the old one.

What i've seen mostly here in south africa. When the battery life has ended they customer opens the ups and takes out the battery and then connects a car battery to the terminals. The then close the ups and let the car battery stand outside the ups.

You may need to change the battery within the battery backup. The normal lifetime of a battery is roughly 3 years.

If you're saying that there is voltage output on the input wire when unplugged from the wall you should contact the manufactureer as this is a defect.
