USB PORTS
does your usb mem stick have any light indicators? if yes , whenever you put you usb stick, does it light? if it lights are USB ports is still ok, You just have to reformat or partition you USB stick.
(you can also try other devices like usb mouse or any usb devices that lights up when you connect it)
if there are no lights if you plug, or no indication that a power goes to your stick, its possible that your usb your are busted. if this is the case, if your laptop has a PCMIA slot, you can find a pcmia USB card, if you dont have. your only option is replace the motherboard.
My averatec computer makes a whirring sound
That sounds as if the cooling fan is working very hard. This normally means that the cooling ducts are full of dust and other rubbish. You may be able suck most out with a vacuum cleaner or blast with an air duster. Failing that, it's taking it apart (you will need a manual) to clean the heat sink area around the cpu.

Contact Averatec and order recovery media, if they are still available.
If you cannot get a Windows XP OS to install, you can always try Linux. The Ubuntu distribution, and most other ones are free.
Do i have to use wi-fi or can i hook directly to internet?
Depends if you have that capability. R45 cable input the one that looks like a big phone plug if you do not have wireless internet software on your machine. You can also buy what they call dongles. These are USB wireless receivers. Check Amazon.com or go to a local computer store. Also look at the top area to see if there is a radio button that is blue in color or a switch either in front panel. You can do dongle for under $10.00. You will then be online wireless.
