I have a set of stereo computer speakers, Altec

i did the same thing when i was over seas, damn 220v, and all it did was blow the fuse in the unit, if you have an inline fuse (along the power cord) it might have blown there, if not you will have to take the unit apart and change the fuse, might be soldiered on the circuit board but its a relatively easy fix, just hope that the board itself didnt get shorted out, if so you will need to replace the system, i used this website when i was overseas and all my stuff got to me with in 10 days...

Altec Lansing ada745

Oh, my goodness.  I have the exact same problem, and it just happened to me today as well, same model.  The fifth prong got bent in while I was trying to plug it back in after diagnosing a different issue (speaker volume would randomly jump up and down regardless of audio source).
It looks like a PS/2 style connector with one of the top pins missing, so I thought about taking an old PS/2 plug and grafting it on after breaking off one of those pins, but the center plastic block on the PS/2 connector is unfortunately keyed differently than the speaker plug (it's lower down on the PS/2 plug).

Altec Lansing ada745 fuse

It is written on the sub. You can also take it out or look at the spare which is taped to the power cord wall plug. I believe it's T1A 250V fuse

NO Sound from NEW speaker unit?

Yes the green wire that goes from the speaker should be plugged into the green jack on the PC. An easy test to see if its the computer or the speakers is to have the speakers on and volume up a little and tap the tip of the green plug with your fingers while out of the computer. If it makes a humming or any noise at all while tapping, the speakers are working if not lets check voltage at the power plug or if the unit has any lights on. Gook luck!

Static coming from speakers

Not much information here but I will try my best, could be a problem with the cable your using between the speakers and the mp3 player, you could have a dry joint, if it's like a "hum" sound your getting it's a bad ground, without the mp3 playing plugged in tap the end of the stereo minijack cable with the speakers turned up? hear the 50hz buzz - if the interference sounds the same it's most likely a bad cable or bad connector on the speakers. I would need to either hear the interference to determine what fault it is or if you can describe it better i.e. what it sounds like.
