Hi. It sounds like what your son did caused the audio service to stop.
Here's how to fix that, if it is in fact that.
First, click on the start button
Next, click on run, and type services.msc
this will open the services box
Go almost completely to the end of the list, and you will see windows audio
click on it one time, and if the audio service is actually running, then it will give you the options of stop, and restart service
If it doesn't say that it is running, then the only chioce it will give you is start .
click start, or restart, whichever one is offered.
next, double click on windows audio and a property box will pop up.
On the drop down menu in the middle, it will give three choices, automatic, manual, and disable
set it to auto
Next click on the recovery tab, and set all three drop downs to restart service
then click apply.
then close property box, and then close services box
reboot computer, and if that was the problem, you should now have sound!!

What system do you have? If it's an HP, Dell. etc, go to their website - support - put in your system serial # or product # if prompted, and download the current drivers. Run the driver install and that should fix the problem. If you're using a home built system, go to the motherboard manufacturer's website for the drivers. Good Luck!

Before taking things apart I'll be very surprised if someone has the same speaker system in bits somewhere An electronics guy would trace the wire back to it's source to decide what it's being used for.
