The light won't come on when we open the door
Yes, I know you probably already got rid of the microwave oven but maybe this can help others. I had the exact same problem, it turned out one of the door switches desoldered itself from the PCB, leaving an ugly black PCB.
All I needed to do is remove the dirty residu by wiping and polishing with a simple pencil eraser and drill away the burned part of the PCB and resolder the switch using a piece of wire to the right PCB track. The switches probably are ready for repleacement and I did notice the relay on the other PCB also looked bad (Ormon G2R-1A-E 12VDC) you might wan to replace that.
All in all it is wise to look for something new.
If you want to fix it, also have a look at the vents on the underside just behind the controls. There is a big chance these are clogged.
Broken door catch
First turn the micro door upside down and shake it this may dis lodge it make sure its unplugged and rotating table is removed. If you can see the piece try tweezers or needle nose pliers but again make sure it is unplugged during any handling period! Second UN plug the device remove its cover with phillips driver or what is needed after it is removed go to the safety switch where the piece is located remove it and shake the piece it may come out if not just replace the complete safety switch
Lights up counts down and thats it no fan no spin no heating
I believe that there are to fuses inside this unit. One feeds the electronic components and the other feeds the turntable and the magnitron. Un plug the unit and check both fuses, you might get away with this cheaply. Please let me know if this helps. P.S. if one of the fuses continues to blow its time to get rid of the unit, because if they go bad they get stronger and very dangerous. What normally would boil water at 3 minutes could change to 45 seconds. Be careful.

Possible bad mag or bad connections at mag or capacitor. If the turntable is turning the control circuits are working. Will be problem in High Voltage section. Is it making any kind of grumbling sounds or any bad smell??? If so Probably bad magnetron.
