Click start control panel administrive tools,computer management,device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question mark ? right click you will have options to update driver,roll back driver,or select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer Close all open programs

This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose DeleteAfter deleting the keys, close the registry editorReboot your computerOpen My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. Sounds like the drive likely died or became disconnected within the laptop. Since it is a laptop you should take it into a compaq service provider and ask them to replace or repair it, it will likely be cheap and fairly easy. I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself however, unless you are familiar with the innards of a laptop. Hope this helps, good luck.

Microsoft updates may not have the driver you are looking when it is searching for drivers. When you are in the device manager make a quick note to the name of the device and go to http://www.compaq.com/country/cpq_support.html
and see if you can match the device to the driver for your pc. If you are able to find the correct driver and install it and still receive the same results then the drive itself may have a problem.

maybe the power lead comming from the PSU into the drive is faulty or make sure both leads are securly plugged into the back..

either it is the ribbon wire, the motor that ejects the tray or the belt that connect the tray and motor is the problem. In case the above three are fine, replace the drive as the sparking might kill your moterboard.

you may need to check to see if you have a CD writeble Rom, open up the computer to see if the cd rom cord is in all the way. I would put a DVD rewriteable in the computer new ones come with the software. you may need a driver. www.download.com

Hi you can obtain a cd cleaning disk insert and follow instructions as the most common fault is dirt on the lens. If you do not get a cleaning disk open the cd draw and with a soft brush clean the little lens and then test. If this doesn't work check that the cd has rotated by placing one in the draw close wait 2-3 seconds and open see if the cd has turned. If it hasn't replace drive

Is is probably too old to take Win 10. Also, USB support normally starts once Windows is loaded. During Boot up, it looking for a hard drive or Bootable CD Media. Windows 7 should be the OS. If you go to safe mode, it should complete booting and then you can list the errors but I suspect there is a driver error. Maybe the wrong version in there.

Hopefully it will still work with a new battery and power supply to charge it. They were quite reasonable back in 2008. Win7 software (no longer supported) and fairly fast.
