Hi. Appreciate any advice. The past 2-3 days I wake up to an "off" computer when I know I left it on. When I try to boot up the laptop the computer appears to be dead, no lights, nothing. I cannot start it up.
I started doing some tests. I have found when I start playing w/the cord I can get a front charge light. then I quickly push the on button and it boots up. So, when I move the computer, it can quickly just die. Totally off. I thought it was the power cord, but now I'm thinking it's not. So, I ran a test. I checked the battery and it said 100%. I moved my laptop (which includes the cord) and it died. I think it's a power problem, some where near the power cord inlet. Anyway to fix myself. Thank you all.
Actually you can basically get this repaired free From HP or send it out for a 3rd party repair and get reimbursed from HP for the repair. Weve repaired way too many of these to list and the Schottkey rectifier in the supply line as well as the DC jack should both be replaced. Go to www.hpnotebooksettlement.com and see if your SKU and serial fall into the paramiters. If you want to do yourself they can be a pain but there is a better jack to use Manned by the same company as the factory one, Post back if you need more help!

My Compaq Presario R3000 laptop (bought June 2004) does not boot up. With the CD-ROM drive and hard drive in, it gives a faint repetitive ticking sound.
Originally, the laptop froze in the middle of an MS Word Application, and then did not boot up again since. The main power light comes on, but that's about it.
I have tried the following:
1. Removed Battery Pack and all electrical connection. Re-connected battery pack - still no change. I have now permanently removed the battery pack and try with the main power supply.
2. Also removed CD-ROM drive. The faint ticking sound stops (thereby assuming it was originally from the CD_ROM drive). There is another small repetitive sound coming from the hard drive. Still does not boot up.
3. Also removed hard drive. I was hoping to see an error message on the screen. I still don't see anything. I converted my hard drive to an external hard drive with an adapter and the data is safe on that.
4. Also removed RAM chip from under the keyboard and put it on the back of the computer in the second slot (I only have one 512 MB RAM chip). Still no change, and it doesn't boot up.
5. Also removed RAM chip completely from computer. I do not get a beeping sound when I switch on the laptop. I am not sure how to diagnose after this.
Hope you guys have seen something like this before and have some suggestions!
Thanks,
Venkat
set the bios/cmos to boot first of your CD drive. get your support discs and restore to original. your hard drive OS has failed and needs to be re-installed. the problem maybe is that when you do that option you will get all your data erased. your solution to that since you can still get the data on the drive when used as external is to back it up. then full restore your system.
if you dont have your restore kit, you can use your Windows OS to fix it, repair option when you boot from CD.

Have you found an answer
If your volume buttons don't work either this should help. Place your laptop on a table and press down on the lower right of the computer(under the arrows near the microphone and headphone symbol) or clamp down on the battery compartment (center). The blue light on the corner should illuminate, if it's off press the network button while putting pressure(the indented one on the right front edge) you shoud hear a double ping sound. I put a thick felt pad between the battery and the computer and now everthing works. I know it sounds really STUPID but it works.
GOOD LUCK
Richard.

I have just purchased a reconditioned Compaq Presario R3000 Intel P4 for home use, but it has no User Guide with it.
Do you know where I can obtain or down load a copy of this 'User guide' or "Quick Start Guide' for this laptop.
Thanks, John

I have reinstalled winxp home with service pack 2 on my compaq presario r3000. It is an authentic version, authenticated with microsoft over the phone, genuine, legitimate. But, I am missing drivers.
For example, I cannot connect to the internet. I have pressed my wireless button on and off, it doesn't light up. Also, when I tried to look for wireless networks under network manager, there was no option. Under device manager 6 devices are highlited with question marks:
?Base System Device
?Multimedia Audio Controller
?Network Controller
?PCI Modem
?SM Bus Controller
?Video Controller (VGA Compatible)
Also can no longer go into hibernation mode as another example.
Could you suggest a solution for me? Thank you very much in anticipation.

Yes :c)
Go here and select the type of notebook you have, whether it's an intel processor or an AMD processor. Follow the links to download your audio, network video, and wireless adapters as well as the motherboard drivers. Run each download and it will tell you step by step on how to install the manual ones and most of them will install automatically.
Thanks and please take a moment to rate as fixya.

I have a compaq presario Cq50 and I accidentally turn the blue (french symbol keys on and off). Can you tell me how I am activating the blue keys?
Ctrl+fn+right Shift. To deactivate, press Ctrl+fn+right Shift twice, meaning Ctrl+fn+right Shift then let go of Shift while still holding Ctrl and fn, then press Shift again.

compaq presario r3000 touchpad scroll function not working after allowing remote access to a telecoms analyst to correct a broadband problem. I have reloaded the ALPS touchpad driver from HP. Still no scroll. I have tried changing setting to "look for wheel" & "assume wheel present" but still not working.
My R3000 touchpad would not scrolll or allow double-tap. I downloaded the synaptics driver, not the ALPS driver on Compaq's site, and it works perfectly now.
