hi i am kishan, from india u r facing this problem so same problem is facing my customer so i think its problem of your lcd so u can do one thing \ back side of your laptop u will find vga port so do arrang one moniter(desktop) and attach it to your laptop vga port and then start your laptop and press alt+f5(simbol of external monitor) and u can dispay your windows on moniter now u can take your backup it will work but u shoud check your laptops lcd dispay regard .... take care

YES YOU FORGOT TO USE USB EJECT SO IT NAGGED YOU. IS THIS XP XP DOES NO SUPPORT MANY THUMB DRIVES. NOR OLDER OS OLD PENTIUM -iii RELIC PC WINDOWS 98 IT HAD NEW. YOU POSTED LACKING ANY OS, W98 IS DEAD.

This e500 has USB1.0 and transfer rate will be slow. If you use Win 98 then install the USB driver (get on web) first. Install software then plug in the USB lead from the crw-785 and don't forget to plug in the DC adaptor for the drive, (e500 USB port does not have enough power to run external drives other than some older thumbdrives).

Various factors determine your Laptops speed. Processor type, amount of RAM, Graphics card and Hard disk drive. Simply swapping your hard disk to a solid state drive will triple the performance.

Try to boot on a live CD. If it's OK, then change the hard drive and install the OS.

Try updating the hardware driver for it.

Assuming that you are using some flavor of Windows, and guessing it might be XP ....

Right-clickie your My Computer and select the last item in the list, which is called Properties.

Select the Properties tab that is labeled Hardware.
On the Hardware tab, there is a button for Device Manager - click that one.

Look down the list for something called Sound and click the + beside it. In that list, there should be one named something like Integrated Audio. It may have some little symbol next to it, like an ! or perhaps a red X ....

Right-clickie the Integrated Audio (or whatever its called) and choose the option for Update Driver. Allow it to search for the driver Automatically when the Wizard opens up ... it will connect to the internet, find a suitable driver for you, and install it.

That should fix it.

If that does not fix it, you may have an actual hardware failure. If Sound is important enough, you may wish to have someone actually look at it for you.

I've had one of these machines with the same message and I just change the HDD, reinstalled Windows and we're good to go.

Dry boot is a way to reset HP laptops. Sometimes it works and sometimes not. Here is how to do it.
Disconnect the power cord, remove the battery, press and hold the power button for about a minute. Then re-insert the battery and power cord and try to turn it back on again.
If you are still having the same issue, remove the battery but leave the power cord and try to turn it on. Oh yeah, disconnect any USB devices and a monitor (if you connected a monitor to your laptop), make sure there is no disc in the drive either.

Per the user manual, the brightness is toggled by holding the Fn Key and pressing F10. You post made no reference to the Fn Key being pressed. If using an external keyboard press scroll lock twice then F10.

Nothing is booting ......when in earnest I say that is the BIOS screen at the beginning not going too. When you say the lights all go but the computer does not BOOT can you clarify please what goes. Now you say the processor fan does not work I imagine you are INSIDE the unit to know this try pushing down on the CPU firmly with your hands it may have dislodged slightly it can do this sometimes.....Ive seen it happen. Now for the not booting I need to know what is if any?.

I'd like to see your old post as I think you may have been given wrong information.If the password shows up when you turn your laptop on, before loading windows, then it is one of 2 security options for laptops.The first is the bios set password.This is the password that will show before the "post" screen (google is your friend here, to see what a post screen is look on google images under "computer post screen")This is very hard to bypass as it's built in to a small chip on the motherboard and is designed to not be bypassed.it's not impossible but it will be very hard.The second is the HDD (Hard Disk Drive) password.This is set a different way and can be harder than the bios password to crack as it's designed to keep the data secure.I kind of need more info if I am to help you
