Unfortunately, it is not possible to provide a definitive answer to this question without knowing the exact model of the Compaq Presario CQ56 Notebook PC. Different models may have different pinouts for the DC power harness. You may need to consult the user manual or contact Compaq/HP support for more information.
For some reason your CPU is not using your RAM for memory. It is going to the .pagesys file, which is a file on your hard drive that holds Virtual Memory. Virtual memory is only used when you run out of RAM. So here are your choices. You are going to need to buy a copy of Windows XP or whatever operating system you want. Then you try two things: First Format your current hard drive to wipe it clean and reload Windows XP. That should clear up your problem if it is a software issue. If that does not work then it is a bad hard drive (but I don't think it is). If it is a hardware issue, your hard drive is corrupt, then you will need to install a new hard drive and then partition, format and load WIndows XP. Either one of those options will get you running again.

As long as it wasn't oven hot, there should not be that much wrong with it. I have a couple of suggestions.
1. Take the hard drive out and put it into a powered external hard drive enclose that is compatible with your hard drive. Easiest solution, and your old computer SERIOUSLY needs upgrading. Then your Hard Drive contents will be visible on the computer you connect the USB lead to as a separate volume. You will have C:\ with the operating system on, D:\ will be the Optical DVD Drive and E:\ will be the contents of the Compaq.

2. XP is old and a Virus Magnet. You may be able to buy a Windows 7, possibly Win 8 upgrade CD, but usually you need the media disc for the OS already on the computer. Or you can buy a full version, which will allow you to upgrade anything.
3. One more thing you can try is tapping F8 as the computer is booting and see if you can see 'Start Computer with last known best Configuration.
4. Or you can take it to a local Independent computer shop and ask them to recover all your data from the hard drive to USB Memory Stick

The problem's with the video card or the vga cord; the monitor is just reacting to no signal from the graphics card. Check that the pins aren't bent. If they are, you can possibly straighten them once. The second time, they may snap off.
Since the KB just flashes once, it could be the power supply, or the motherboard. If the motherboard has any caps that are swollen on top or leaking, you might need a new motherboard.
By far the most common reason for this error is that directory browsing is forbidden for the Web site. Most Web sites want you to navigate using the URLs in the Web pages for that site. They do not often allow you to browse the file directory structure of the site

1GB of RAM is not enough to run Windows XP and the programs you installed efficiently. Removing unnecessary programs should make more memory available for necessary programs but it will never be fast. Crucial.com is a great resource for memory upgrades but I don't think you should invest in a computer that old with a completely unsecure and unsupported operating system (XP).

Here is what I would do...
Turn the PC off and unplug it. Then press the power button to drain any residual power from the motherboard.
1. Remove and reseat the memory module(s). Restart the PC.
2. If removing and reseating the memory module(s) doesn't work, if you have more than one memory module installed, remove all but one, and start the PC.
Test each memory module one at a time, until you find the one that is bad.
If none of that works, check for bulging and leaking capacitors on the motherboard. These may be particularly noticeable around the processor area.
