Dell Inspiron 4000 Notebook - Page 3 Questions & Answers
Display area is "shrunken" on Dell Inspiron 4000 display
Go to Control Panel - Display - Settings - Advance - Monitor, set it to Default monitor and click OK.
Does the display now fill the screen?
If this doesn't work, go to the DELL WEB site and see if there a driver for the display. To ensure you get the correct driver for your model laptop, use the Service Tag number (which is printed on the label on the bottom of the laptop) to the download page for your model laptop, download the correct Windows XP or Vista version of the driver from :-
www.dell.com
Ways to load OS
External Floppy disk drive or External CD/DVD drive.
Might be easier to just replace the internal drive.
The mute wont turn on,on the dell inspiron
Have you tried going into the speaker settings? We'll assume with a new PC you have Vista installed, click the speaker icon on the right side of the tray, and selecting "Mixer" will enable access to volume control for the output devices and for applications.
If no speaker icon is visible To check the volume controls in Windows Vista, click Start and then click Control Panel. Choose Hardware And Sound and then click Adjust System Volume under the Sound section. The Volume Mixer window will open, and you should see volume sliders for Device and Applications. Click and drag the sliders to view the volume level percentages. If the speaker icons show a circle with a red slash, click the icon so the speakers are no longer muted.
Furthermore, you’ll want to double-check all of your master
volume and mute settings.
Mouse drifts all over screen
Hello there, this a well known problem with inspiron 4000's like a majority of other Dell Inspiron user's... After some time I've managed to fix it simply by downloading a touchpad driver (Tp2aa10i.exe) for Inspiron 4000 from a Dell website. The problem is the defect of the mousestick! And Dell is aware of it! Upon installation, simply disable the mousestick and the headache's gone! This way you can still use you your touchpad and mouse.....
Need restore disc for windows millinium
Hi dvd_hix
Your solutions here would be
1. To buy a windows xp package and reload the laptop from scratch.
2. Alternatively you could look for a window me disk from someone that doesn't have it loaded on another PC as this would be a violation of Microsofts Copyright.
3. Take it to a IT specialist to recover the password for you.
Feel free to browse the Repair Service directory for a service provider close to you

Inspiron 4000 power problems
When power supplies go out, they can cause some real damage to the machine, especially in this case, it being hot indicates a short. First let's talk about the new adapter, if it's a Dell replacement great, if it's a Targus universal not good. The Targus supplies don't work well with Dell machines and can cause problems, return it and get a Dell replacement. If you have a Dell replacement, then try removing the battery and powering it up just with the adapter. Sometimes the adapter going out can cause the battery to develop a short, and this will cause the machine not to start. If the problem still exists at this point, you will need to take it in for a diagnostic, because the problem will be somewhere inside, most likely the motherboard.
Wireless cards
As long as your laptop is running windows 2000 or XP. You can go with almost any PC wireless card. My recommendation would be to take your laptop to your local computer store and they should be able assit you and get you all set up
Thanks

There could be two things causing the issue.
1. The motherboard inside the system is on a verge of burnig out
2. Could be a lose componet like , memory, modem , etc causing the problem
Steps you can take: Remove AC power and battery from the system ,Press the power button for 10 seconds. Replug and check
