Ive just pressed the 'stop' button on mine and it moved the cartridge to show which ink needed replacing and then when pressed again it moved to the replacement gap

I had the same problem, this was after printing with thick card and the printer was in a cold room. When the room got to normal temperature and wrmed the printer up then the noise stopped.

If you're wanting to replace the waste pads you're going to be making a lot of work for yourself as an external waste ink kit is considerably easier to fit via the little access hatch in the back.That said, you can disassemble the printer if you can get a copy of the Service Manual. Sites like 2manuals will have them and some will charge for access.One key thing to note however is that the printers are designed such that the case itself provides the stability for the printer components. If you remove too many panels and/or parts you'll knock the printer out of alignment and need a service centre with the appropriate jigs to realign it. Is there any indication as to the kind of error? If the printer is connected to a PC you should get a description as to what is at fault? Any additional information would be great.

The black print head nozzles maybe blocked. Inkjet printers need to be used frequently to prevent blocked print head nozzles. You may have blocked print head nozzles. Try the printer maintenance to clear the printer nozzles. After several deep cleaning attempts and there is no improvements in the print then a new print head is required.
