It's almost certain to be a common fault with a tiny surface mount fuse on the display circuit board just behind the blank screen. The fuse is marked F1 and can be simply bridged to fire up the display again. The following method should work perfectly.

Steps I took – and it worked beautifully – display problem solved !!

1. Ease off the plastic facia that covers the control buttons – (no screws – it just clips on)
2. Remove the cross head screw that is seen to the bottom left of the display unit.
3. Flip display unit open – remove the cross head screw that holds the dark plastic support clip that is behind the unit and top right ish!!
4. Remove the display unit – unscrew the 4 small cross head screws that hold the display assembly together – NOTE THAT THE CONNECTING RIBBON RUNS THROUGH THE HOLE – I didn’t make a note at first, and it took me ages to work out where it went when trying to re-assemble it !!
5. Mark the connecting ribbon so that you know which way up it should be, then carefully pull it away from the black connecting block – Re-assemble merely by pushing it carefully back into place.
6. On the circuit board you will see a large (ish) black Integrated Circuit – using a magnifying glass you will see a tiny soldered fuse marked F1 just to one end of this Integrated Circuit.
7. Using a single strand of 1 amp fuse wire and carefully soldered it across the two terminals - Some people decided to simply bridge the F1 fuse with a tiny blob of solder - both systems work and have caused no further problems in the past couple of years.
8. Having a soldering tip small enough is vital if you are to attempt this – an ordinary tip is TOO BIG. I used a piece of copper earth wire (obtained from ordinary “Twin and Earth” electricians household mains wiring cable) I then wound it around my soldering tip and filled it down to a fine point.
9. Re-assemble – switch on – and if you have been careful and succeeded in this feat of micro soldering – you should have a realistic chance of having a fully functioning display once again.

If you epson rx600 is installed on your computer, print from the Smart Panel. You can install drivers and programming by connecting it to your computer and letting the "found new hardware" wizard do it's job.

A bubble will pop up to let you know when you are low on or out of ink. Click on the bubble for more information and follow the instructions.

I seem to have fixed my own question. Thanks to the "silly girl" pressing buttons. On the Epson Stylus Photo RX600 try pressing the stop button, color button, B&W button and the On button all at the same time. It starts up without that fatal red indicator with a message saying the ink tray has been emptied. Press the OK button and things are back to normal, I hope!

the USB cable from the computer and then disconnect the power to your
printer. Reconnect the power to a different power outlet, and turn your
printer back on. If the same issue occurs, your printer will require
service.

Did anyone fin the answer to this? It happened to me too.

Black LCD continued. In fact, the Epson Stylus Photo RX600 appears to be notorious for the LCD burning out! If you go to the Epson Website, they list 3 parts dealers (in February 2007). 2 of 3 of them do not appear to list the LCD screen for replacement. The website of the 3rd one is down. I may call them on Monday. MEANWHILE-- Sooner or later you will want to change your ink cartridges. Here's how to get the cartridge holder to move: 1) Turn off the printer, then turn it on again. Wait until the lights stop blinking. 2) Press the [Setup] button. It should light up. 3) Press the DOWN ARROW 4 times (It is the down part of the concave circular button immediately to the right of the burned out screen). 4) Press the [OK] button TWO TIMES. If you are successful, the printer should buzz briefly. When you open the top, the ink holder should have moved to its "load/reload" position, and you can then change the ink cartridges. Other things to try: After unplugging the printer, I was able to remove the LCD screen with an assortment of flat head screwdrivers and phillips head screwdrivers. The LCD screen itself is in a metal holder, and plugs into a small circuit board, so it could be replaced if any of us can find a new one. It may also be possible to buy a surplus compatible LCD screen, and just plug it in. If it works, the new screen could be taped to the front of the printer, even if it doesn't fit into the manufacturer's hole... Some of you (who have the same mixture of tool skills, boldness, and stupidity as me!) will have the tools and the know-how to remove the dead screen. See if you can find it at an electronics parts supplier The serial number in mine was 0396563 -- If you can find a replacement, post who, where, how much and what. If you don't have the skills or the tools, don't try it. There is too much delicate stuff that can easily be broken on the way in... Just get another one-- Or maybe a Hewlett Packard next time around :-)

I just had this same error message pop up on my RX600 yesterday. There is a utility that you can d/l from the Epson website to reset the counter at the link below.

The reason the service message pops up is that it is telling you that the waste ink pads are near the end of their service life and probably saturated with ink. You should still clean the waste ink pads or ink will eventually run out the bottom of your printer and create a big mess. If you do a Google search for something like "rx600 waste ink pads" there are some how-to discussions on doing this yourself. I'm going to clean mine later today.

They say it's not hard to do and you don't have to disassemble your printer, just use a toothpick or modified paperclip to remove the pads after you park the cartridges in their "replace ink cartridge" position and unplug the printer. A more detailed procedure can be found with the Google search.

Inkjet printers need to be used frequently to prevent ink drying out and blocking the print head nozzles. If the print head cleaning maintenance routine does not clear the blockages, then print head needs replacing, but it may be expensive. It may be more cost effective to buy a later model and better printer than replace the print head.

Are ya sure it isn't only preventing scanning direct to printer output? Is it also disallowing scanning to file? Epson printers can´t operate if one of the cartridges is empty. There is no workaround for that. Epson printers actually use a LITTLE ink from ALL the color carts, even when you select "black only" in the driver. They do this to help keep the nozzles from clogging in the case of users who mostly print in black. Nobody [besides perhaps Epson] ever claimed Epson printers were the most efficient or environmentally-friendly ones in the world. for quite a while now Epson uses piezoelectric printheads, as opposed to the thermal heads used on most other printers. The enemy of piezo heads is air bubbles. They candamage the costly head, and that's why you cannot continue to use the printer if ANY individual cartridge runs out of ink. In fact, Epson designed its cartridges to signal "empty" when there's still around 15% (higher by some estimates) ink left! That's to make certain you can't run the cart completely dry and thereby introduce air into the head. If you don't believe that, carefully open up a spent cartridge over a sink, slice open the plastic film covering the various ink channels and rinse it out -- repeatedly push in the spring loaded outlet valve as well. There's so much ink left, it will take quite a while before the water begins to clear! It's incredibly wasteful and annoying, but it actually saves money in the long run, because it's even MORE wasteful to run tons of cleaning cycles just to purge the head once you've gotten air in the system. Aftermarket carts and ink can save lots of money, but they're a crap shoot. Fed up with OEM price gouging and scare tactics, I decided to try a clear-cartridge refill kit for my R200.
