When loading and using Real Flight Basic, I

Shaders are usually found on higher end video cards. If you are using the nVidia FX5200 that came in that system, you can try updating the drivers to the newest ones you can find, but more likely you'll need to upgrade to a better AGP graphics card...one that has 256MB to 512MB of RAM onboard. You'll want to research the card of choice to see if the shader function is available. I don't recall that FX 5200 having anything more than Shader 2.0 capability, but you need to make sure your DX9 and the driver for the card are up to most current.

"Boot Failed. P4-HL-DT-STDVDRAM GT30F"

How did you install Ubuntu? Using a Live CD I presume. If you were able to boot from the CD-Rom and run the Linux installation either as a demo or a physical installation then the CD-Rom drive is working. It should be able to boot from a Windows recovery CD and run the Windows installation program. There is no problem with the drivers because Ubuntu has its own drivers. Maybe the firmware of the Drive, but I doubt it. Since your hard drive is brand new (scrubbed) you have nothing to lose by physically installing Ubuntu and playing with it to verify the hardware and possibly to update the firmware of the CD-Rom drive. When choosing the Ubuntu distribution do not use one with a version number higher than 12.04 LTS. I could not install version 12.10 on an old tablet PC for some hardware reason: The Ubuntu part was not working but KDE was fine. When installing Ubuntu install grub on the C: drive. It will be wiped anyway when you reinstall Windows.Good Luck.

When I turn the computer on, I get the following

This happens when the BIOS can't find the hard disk. If you're lucky it's just the hard disk that has failed, if you're not it's the motherboard itself the one that failed.
To find out which replace the hard disk with a good one then try to boot in th BIOS - if you can it's the hard disk, if you can't it's the motherboard.

Cold boot failure. boots after

What happens during the cold boot failure? Is it not detecting all the hardware and stopping because of a detection failure? I would also check the power supply and check the main board for swollen leaking capacitors.

Cold boot failure. finally boots

IN SOME CASES IT IS NOT ENOUGH..BECAUSE THE bootmngr has an issue with key entries in the registry..you should have a windows cd to fix it
or a partition recovery in order ....if problem goes further..if not ...will be enough..start windows normally or the last know configuration that worked

I too have a similar

Both the reset and power switches are normally-open, momentary contact to operate. If you twist the reset leads together, it's the same as permanently holding the motherboard reset button pressed. You don't need the reset button in any case, so you don't have to worry about replacing the switch.

The LED on the motherboard indicates the presence of standby voltage, so the power supply is working to at least that degree. The power switch is only a signal to the motherboard to turn on the power supply and start the rest of the system operating. So if the system doesn't come on when you press the power switch, either the power supply is bad or something is preventing the motherboard from starting properly.

A quick test of the power supply is to ground the PS_ON pin in the output connector:

pgh_pa_guy_7.png

Unplug the connector from the motherboard and use a piece of wire or a bent paperclip to short the pin marked PS_ON to the ground pin on either side in the same row (not across to the other row, which is the standby 5-volt pin!). If the power supply is working, it will turn on and its fan will start running. This doesn't mean the supply is 100% good, but if it doesn't start with this test you certainly need to replace it.

If the supply starts this way but not when it's connected to the motherboard and you press the power switch, then you'll need to figure out why the motherboard's not starting. There may be something wrong with the board itself, or something connected to it is preventing it from starting. Removing parts and parts substitution will help you find the culprit.

As far as getting a replacement switch assembly, you might try Gateway support to find the assembly part number and see if they offer it for sale, or check eBay. Or you can try replacing the switch by itself. On some assemblies the switch is just held into the bracket by tabs, and companies like Digi-Key and MCM sell suitable replacements.

Push power button, no response

Considering the the motherboard LED illuminates when you turn power on, the power supply is probably OK, however you cannot test it without a PC power supply tester. If the LED on your monitor does not change color from amber to green, you either have a defective power supply, motherboard or processor.

I'm sorry I cannot be of further help to you but this problem cannot be isolated without the proper test equipment. Accordingly, I highly reccommend that you consult and obtain the services a PC technician to determine the cause of this problem.

The computer will turn on

I'm sorry to tell you but your motherboard is dying - you should replace it as soon as possible otherwise when it will fail it will fry everything else that's attached to it and you'll lose all your data. For that you have 2 options: either you buy yourself a similar board online (you are not going to find a new one - the pc is too old) and replace it yourself or you take the pc to an authorized Gateway repair shop - that will cost a lot more than the first option but is going to be hassle free.
Or you could just buy a new pc.

Gateway 510x r4 installing a video card

Gateway Support, and the main support page for the Gateway 510x R4 desktop computer. (It's a Legacy computer)

http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/510Series/2900456/2900456nv.shtml

Left-click on - Components
Now left-click on -
2521362 - Intel (Midway 2 GV) Motherboard No CPU RO
(Under the Motherboards heading)

Here you will see a photo of the Gateway 510X R4 motherboard.

[You can enlarge this photo for more clarity in viewing.
Right-click on the photo.
Now left-click on - Save Image As

In the File name: box, you will see - 2521362nv
This will be the file name you will look for.
You can add to this file name, so that it is easier to find.

Left-click twice after the v in 2521362nv
Make one space with your space bar.
Type Gateway 510X motherboard.
Now go below to the right, and click on - Save.

This will go to your My Pictures folder. Open My Pictures, (Start>My Pictures), and double-click on the motherboard photo.
Now go below, and left-click on the Zoom In icon.
The Plus ( + ) sign]

In the main menu left-click on Specifications.

Scroll down to the heading - Expansion Capabilities

Here you will see listed -
Three PCI Bus add-in card connectors (SMbus routed to PCI bus connector 2)

This means you have a PCI slot for a graphics card slot.

Looking at the motherboard photo, you will see three white PCI slots.
In the motherboard photo, these are the three white long slots, towards the bottom left.

Use any open, unused PCI slot. Doesn't matter which one you use.

You need a graphics card that fits in a PCI slot.

These are examples of PCI graphics cards,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Category/guidedSearch.asp?CatId=28&sel=Detail;55_158_2872_2872

My suggestion would be for a graphics card like this,

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5071671&CatId=3670

(You have a 250 Watt power supply in your computer. In the Components list, it is listed under Power Supplies. You have one of those 250 Watt power supply's)

I wouldn't suggest spending more, or going for a better graphics card.
The single core Intel Pentium 4 (3.0GHz) processor, won't handle newer games that require a dual core processor.
No reason to waste your money.

Any questions please state in a Comment.

Why does the computer not see the 1 gb memory

Assuming "memory cards" refers to RAM:
First, make sure you have the right type of memory; the Gateway 510x uses either (DDR333 PC2700, 184p DIMM) or (400MHz DDR400 PC3200, 184p DIMM) 1 gb memory sticks. If the RAM type is correct check that it is properly installed. Firmly press the sticks into the slot until the plastic clips on the side snap into place.
