Hi. It is recommended that you use a balanced memory total. Just like the wheels of the car. They all must be of the same capacity. But what you can try to swap the locations of where you put the cards in. If you still have problems then just use the 2 pieces of 512mb. Cheers!

I want to add second hard drive to gateway 700X.

Your computer was most likely built circa 2002 so there is no limit on the capacity of the hard drive. As far as speed, the 7200 rpm hard drives are plentiful. I usually get my hardware at www.newegg.com they have very competetive prices and ship fast...their website is easy to navigate for searches and they offer open box deals and free shipping. You should have at least 2 empty 3.5" bays to place a second drive, so go with any capacity you can afford.

Monitor was in power safe mode, had older monitor

not completely sure but Ill give it a shot
might be something is going wrong with your monitor
or your monitor ID was not established try these 3 things
1. right click display after attaching trouble some monitor
go to properties click detect see if it identifies it properly then go to screen saver tab look under power saver mode is this monitor put under there if so change it.

2 go to control panel click on device manager scan plug and play then look under drivers is the right product listed and updated

3. ok this happens a lot look at the pins on both ends of your VGA cord monitor cord are they all there and line up properly ?
if they are missing then its your problem if bent gently with an object slowly push them back into place be very careful when you do this or they will break if the cord is shot and you can replace it theyre are some great cheap but nice cords even optical enhancing online pretty cheap

I hope my tips have helped good luck

Need to load xp on gateway

Do you have a full installation disc or an Upgrade version of XP? The full install should give you an option for partitioning and formatting the new hard drive as part of the installation process. From Microsoft, read this page for details:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313348 . You may need some additional drivers if you have a SATA hard drive. More screen shots and details are here: http://www.theeldergeek.com/hard_drives_03.htm .

An alternative way of dealing with the problem may be to use a third-party Partition Manager software (Symantec's Partition Magic, Paragon's Partition Manager). Paragon's site is
http://www.partition-manager.com/ . This site has various levels of Partition Management software (with different features available in the more expensive versions). You'll need the bootable CD version of the software (recovery disc, .iso) to do the partitioning.

I hope this helps.

(I thought the upgrade version could also be done to a new hard disc including the partitioning; all you needed was a Win OS disc from an earlier version to prove qualifying ownership.)

Have a Gateway that I cannot load Windows XP on,

Make sure your PC has the minimum requirements for XP. It would help to know what errors you are getting when you try to install XP.

• PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended
• 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
• 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space*
• Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor
• CD-ROM or DVD drive
• Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

Possible power supply or ram problem

before you tear into all that hardware stuff please first try this. Try start up in Safe Mode press F8. Choose Safe Mode, when at the choice window, to select either Safe Mode Desktop, OR System Restore, chooses system restore and choose a time before you had the "Problem" and follow instructions. This should get you back.

Have a Gateway 700 X Desktop that powers up, loads

This could be a result of you accidently hitting your desktop while trying to move it and you may have knocked the fan off. You can't hear if the fan has been disconnected but it causes the tower to overheat and it will shut off and reboot over and over and over. Please contact geek squad or go to your nearestn licensed retailer and see how much it will cost to replace the fan, if needed. It will be covered under warranty if you have one.

Hope this helps ^^. Please dont forget to rate, Thanks

I have the same problem with my Gateway 700x,

OK, this is a fairly common problem. It should be an easy fix.
The PSU inside ya Case should have a "Wattage" printed clearly on alabel, perhaps 300Watts 500Watts, whatever, get any suitable PSU that has the same or higher specs, and that fits the screw patterns.
Check the Fan in the PSU... if it is NOT spinning when the Power button is pressed, or at least sorta "Pulse" at switch on, the odds on ya PSU is kaput. First remove all PSU connections EXCEPT for the Motherboard one and see if it will power up, if so, the turn off and reconnect each device in turn and check, IF after ya connect a device and it win't start then THAT is ya faulty bit, replace. If not, then ya gonna have to replace the PSU.
Generally, ALL PSU are the same with a few exceptions.
I generally Plug it all in B4 I actually "Button it up". To prove it was the PSU, as, sometimes it is something faulty, causing the PSU to NOT start up.
Replacement is easy. You simply carefull remove all the power Conns from Motherboard, Drives, DVD etc. then remove the 4 screws holding the PSU. Then install the replacement, reverse order.

Effectively, that's the PS. Unless you do have electronics knowledge, don't attempt to fix it. You may end with a burning PC and a huge hospital bill.
