My R40 does not have sound. In device manager all drivers are installed for the sound card. Sound would play through headphone jack but not copmuter speakers. I attached docking station and could still use headphones off of it. When going into the system speaker in device manager / system devises it says that the system speakers drive is not installed. I have gone to Lenovo website and downloaded and installed the drivers. Still no luck. Now my headphones wont play any sound. I have checked all the other basic stuff. Sound turned up, media player turned up. Is there something I am missing?? Please help!!

I replaced the hard drive & now I get this error message "1802: Unauthorized network card is plugged in Power off and remove the miniPCI network card." & I cannot boot the computer. I put the old drive back in & the same thing happened.
This is due to the fact that IBM laptops have a list of accepted devices, and the pci card is not recognised in the list. On IBM - Amilo, Mini PCI card slot is usually at the back of computer. Locate and remove Mini PCI wireless card, you will not have integrated wireless after this.
Other solution is to find the option to disable mini PCI in bios settings.
Here is how mini pci wireless card looks like:

After pressing the power button, computer doesn't power up. The battery light is lit and there's another symbol lit as well. i'm not sure what that symbol is for though. It's left of the battery light symbol. It's looks like a circle with a z in it.
Batteries can develop a dead short and cause a no start. Try starting without the battery. Other things you can try is checking the power supply with an ohm meter,or plug it in and stick it in your mouth, but me personally, I'd use the ohm meter. Also check the memory, a faulty memory chip can cause this. If none of these work, them I'm afraid the problem may be with the power management chip on the motherboard. If the pm chip is malfunctioning, then motherboard replacement is your only option.

i forget cmos password pl. help
You will have to remember it. IBM puts a security chip on the motherboard, the bios password is burned into this, and there is no way around it. There are a few places that will replace the chip, but they are very expensive. The only other way is to replace the motherboard. I've found that replacing the motherboard is cheaper than having the chip replaced, so, if possible, remember the password.

If you place the PC in standby or hibernate or you do a restart - the PC just has a blank screen (won't boot up again). If you do a full shut down and then turn it back on - it will boot.
You need to take off your hibernation.
In control panel display then screensaver. Then click power at the bottom of that screen.
You'll see a setting for system standby you can set that to never. At the top click on hibernate remove the check in enable hibernation.
Click apply restart and your system should work.

My R40 Thinkpad loses the system date & time after being shut down for a while. However it does not lose it if only shut down for a few minutes. Any ideas please?
you need to change your cmos cell on motherbord circuit for that open back side cover and then you can see cmos cell on motherbord circuit.Change it pur chase new cmos cell.
Your old cmos cell has not enough waltage so your bios settings are not saved when you turn off the power.
