The only thing I can think of is that you don't have the film quite loaded correctly. The leader part of the film needs to to go in the correct way so it pulls around over the outside. Then you need to make sure that the holes along the side of the film fit over the teeth of the advance mechanism. This is what actually winds the shutter spring and so forth.As you pull on the lever it pulls the film with turns the toothed wheel and winds it all up. If the film is just going over the teeth instead of pulling them along then you would have the problem you describe.
