Tlhinkcentre powers up shows desktop then turns solid blue then gray

Suggest we start with the simple stuff first, Ken.The two major issues with desktop computer failure, is;1) The computer is dirty inside2) Power Supply is badThe two kind of go hand, in hand; so it's logical.I see by your statement/s that you believe this is software related.I believe it is hardware related.Follow Anti-Static Procedures, and let's take a look 'under the hood'.Your body carries Static electricity. Static WILL fry out (Short Circuit), the delicate hardware components inside a computer.Relieve your body of Static BEFORE reaching inside your computer.Computer on a table, computer unplugged from power, computer case open;TOUCH an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of the open computer case. This action will relieve your body of Static.IF, you leave your computer in the middle of working on it, be SURE to Touch the metal frame again upon your return.Moving on................Lenovo Support > IBM ThinkCentre A50 Desktop PC > HMM(Hardware Maintenance Manual),http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?&DocID=HT035401I don't know which Machine Type you have.(Not even sure if it makes that much difference, actually)Go down through the list, and click on the appropriate ThinkCentre A50 in blue, with the correct Machine Type to the right. On the next page click on the Down Arrow, under the heading -> Download now.(Or you can click on the blue file name, to the Left)Ignore if you are aware; This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files. After you click on the down arrow, it may take up to 30 seconds, before the first page comes up.A PDF file will not show until fully downloaded. This is a Temporary download. If you wish to save it to your computer, and do not know how to, post back in a Comment. After you download it to your computer, you can burn it off to disk for safekeeping. (Or flashdrive, yecch)Then after checking to see if it is a good copy, you can delete it from the computer you downloaded it to, and save harddrive space. Also, happen to have access to an inexpensive multimeter, or a KNOWN to be good, Compatible power supply? Post back in a Comment.Regards, joecoolvette

PC takes 3 to 5 minutes to boot - reduct it?

If you are using windows machine, go to start->run and type cleanmgr.exe and follow the instructions to clean up the junk and temporary files in your machine.
Also go to start->run and type msconfig and go to Startup tab and remove all the unnecessary startup items.
Also uninstall unwanted programs/applications from control panel (start->controlpanel) and go to add or remove programs / Programs and features based on your operating system version.
Now you can clean up your registry values using http://www.pctools.com/registry-mechanic/ or some other software available in the market.
Once you have done this if you know you have many unused useless files in your machine remove then and do a fresh restart. Then defrag your drives using the utility available in windows (go to my computer and right click on the drive you need to defragment and then click on the properties in the pop down menu. Once you are in properties window go to tools tab and click on defragment now). After the defragmenting is complete you can restart your machine again and you will notice a significant performance boost.
More than everything you need to make sure your machine is malware free; viruses and malware are one of the major reasons for systems being slow. So run a thorough Antivirus and Anti Spyware checking using some standard antivirus software and anti spyware software.

Hope this will help you.

How do get to the restore options? f key? ibm m

Dear Sir,

plz use this step for restore

To use System Restore to restore Windows XP to a previous state, follow these steps:
  1. Log on to Windows as Administrator.
  2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.
  3. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.
  4. On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system restore point in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next.

Note A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.
  5. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.
  6. Log on to the computer as Administrator. The System Restore Restoration Complete page is displayed.
  7. Click OK.
If you successfully restored your computer to a previous state, and the computer is performing as it should be, you are finished.

If the restore process completed successfully but the computer is still not performing as you want, go to the "How to undo a system restoration after you perform a System Restore" section. If you received an error message and the restore process did not finish, or if you cannot run System Restore, go to the "Next Steps" section

Processor died on ibm desktop. any way I can get

Simple. Remove the drive and install it in a similarly equipped computer as a slave drive. What I mean by this is your drive is either a IDE drive (wide gray data cable) or a serial SATA drive (no wide gray cable) - the receiving computer would have to be of the same type to accept the drive

Before you do this ... who told you the processor was dead? It may be worth taking to the Big Box Store for a Free (as advertised) computer check up.

Your A50 doesnt lent itself to upgradability - I dont think I would put much into it to repair. However, you may be able to find a used replacement processor for a reasonable price.

Computer kept shutting down. found the fan not

Well let's think about it for a minute, it seems really complicated and one theory could easily be a damaged processor by the malfunctioning fan. I think it actually could be the central processing unit being damaged by it continuously being pushed without a fan. You probably fried it and good because it had no cooling unit. Who knows what could have been melted out in there? That computer might need replacing altogether unless you can figure out specifically what got fried. Try the processor first though
