It is possible that the start button has shorted , the switch is struck or there is liquid within the switch that make the trigger from the short.
So first of all check the function of the switch after removing the battery, you there is no action or click sound it can be short. Also check if there is presence of moisture.
If so use a hair dryer to heat the switch area so as to dry up any moisture.
If not you will need to open to confirm why the camera switches on by itself by checking on the voltage from the start switch.
Also check the main processor panel. Attempt only if equipped.

I had exactly the same problem. I checked the shutter swithch but it was working correctly so it was just melfunctioning of software? I played around, taking video in different resolutions etc and eventually it came back to normal. If you can not charge the battery, use rubber band(s) hitching it between lens and power switch, snug the switch stay in pushed position. You then should be able to charge the battery to play the camera. Good luck.
Flash doesnt operate on any

Follow the steps below to check if the issue can be resolved.
Check if the battey is fully charged.
Charge the battery in the Camera and check if the flash charge lamp is flashing. Once the Lamp goes out the Flash in the Camera gets charged.
Once it is charged, press the Up Arrow button in the Camera continuously to select the Forced Flash which will strobe regardless of the surrounding brightness.
Make sure that the Camera is not in TWILIGHT or LANDSCAPE scene selection mode.
Make sure that the MODE and REC MODE is not set to BURST3 or BRKTG from the Menu settings.
Change the REC MODE and SCENE SELECTION Mode to enable the Flash in the Camera.
If the issue persists, service may be required.

Flash has broken on DSC S85
Flash Board part number is as follows..
147667311... FLASH UNIT, available in
Part Store.
If you are not comfortable with replacing above flash board in DSC-S85, take camera to qualified camera tech because camera will be apart in detail to replace flash board.
