If you can take pictures, and the LCD display is dark, that means that the LCD display is faulty.
To replace the display the camera must be disassembled.
If newly taken pictures are dark, you can only view old pictures, but you cannot see the image captured, through the LCD display or throught the viewfinder, and the lens does extend normally, that usually means that the CCD sensor is faulty.
The CCD sensor is the sensor that captures light and converts it into electrical signal. The CCD sensor is located inside the camera, right behind the lens. Replacement requires complete disassembly.
If the problem is the CCD sensor the camera may be replaced by Sony even out of warranty. The first thing to do in your case is contacting Sony at the number listed on the owners manual, or see

An LCD fault instead will not be covered out of warranty time, but it is still worth contacting Sony before any third party to check what quote they can give on repair.
