A friend gave me this router cause he never used it. I seem to need a username and password to set it up. It looks as if the username might be "newdsl". Don't know the password. I've tried resetting it to factory defaults but it still needs a username and password. I found an online manual for the same model # but it doesn't operate the way the manual says. Do I need a specific firmware version or something?
it's unusual for a default password to be used bur tr typing 'password' as the password

I recently moved to Georgia i was with verizon in Delaware, and i had problems with my Modem, i was connected of all places INDIA and the fool changed my pass word for my modem. How do i reset my modem so that i can use my wireless modem with my new service which is Comcast. Note: it recognizes the signal but will not allow me to connect , say's its secure and its my modem... How do i reset the modem. Thanks for your Help Joe
Somewhere on the case there should be a tiny little hole with reset labelled on it and if you stick a bent paper clip in it and hold it for about 30 seconds it should reset the whole thing to factory defaults.

I instructed my father to purchase an Actiontec GT704-WG from Verizon. One of the main reasons I chose this router is because it supports port forwarding. I want to be able to Remote Admin into him PC to provide tech support for him. Verizon has put their own firmware on it which removed port forwarding among other feartues. Actiontec's website says not to update/replace the Verizon firmware with their's. Has anyone tried this to see if it will work or not? Does anyone know any other way to around this problem?
I just flashed my verizon modem FT704-WG with the actiontec update upgrade301060gt704wg.img. I then selected "Obtain an IP Address through DHCP" and bam away we go... working better than verizons version.

Step 1: Shutdown the computer.

Step 3: Unplug the Broadband modem’s power cable and wait for 30 seconds.
Step 4: Plug in the Broadband modem’s power cable and wait for its lights to appear stable.
Step 5: Plug in the router's power cable once the modem’s lights appear stable.
Step 6: Power on the computer on and test the Internet connection.
if this still didnot work, maybe you need to upgrade the firmware of your router

i have no installation disk how can i hook it up without it?
You need to input your AT&T user name and password in the router's setup page and set the modem to PPoPE.
Here is the user manual: DSL setup is on page 26

I have the GT704WG and I was on the internet one night, then all of a sudden the power light turned orange and the wireless light went out, but the DSL and Internet lights remained on. So after a while I turned it off, the next day when I turned it back on, the power light stays red, with No DSL light, The Internet light is Green, the Ethernet lights blink every 10 secs, but theres no Wireless Light.
Check cable connections.
Try unplugging router from power for five minutes.
If that does not work call Internet Service provider to check if there is a problem with their server.

I keep getting an error after setting up a new port forwarding rule. Keeps giving me "virtual server add error". Am I entering an invalid port number or something?
I had this error. There was an old rule for an old device that was no loonger connected. If a device that has a rule is not connected, no information will show up telling you there is a rule. But it already exists and is hidden. The rule will only show up when the device is connected. But the rule is active wether or not the device is connected.
The only .I found to fix this is to reset the router to defualt settings, this will remove the old device and it's tules from memotry.

trying to connect my router to Centurylink, I have a solid DSL light and my connection status shows a speed. PPP connection is stuck on connecting. I am trying to determine whether this is due to my router settings and what I need to change them to.
You need to verify your connection type w/ Centurylink- they may run on DHCP which is a different connection protocol than PPPoE. If you have a static IP address, fair warning: the Verizon Actiontec is historically tetchy on static and NOT to be used as a primary modem/router- it will lose settings.

The DSL light is green but blinking and the Internet light is not even coming on. All computers in house get the wireless signal and says the internet is working, but we don't have internet access.
Hi,
Welcome to FixYa! What you are experiencing right now is what they called NO SYNC in ISP term. That means that your router is not getting any signal from the server. Please try to follow these method for you to be able to fix the problem.
1. Turn Off the router.
2. Check the DSL cable, the one that is connected from the router to the wall outlet.
3. Check if there's any device between them and remove it.
4. Try to switch the end of the cable.
3. Try to use another cable if possible.
5. Power on the router and wait until the DSL light goes steady.
6. If nothing happens, try to reset the router by pushing the reset button at the back of it.
7. Press and hold it for 30 seconds while the router is on.
8. Turn off the router and after 30 seconds, turn it back on.
If the DSL light is still blinking, there's a possibility that the problem is with the router itself or the line outside your house going to the server itself.
Hope this information will help. Thank you for using Fixya!
