Attempting to install a Belkin router to my

Installing routers depends on what use they are meant for and also the type of router which it happens to be. Basically if they are to be used for internet facilities they are best installed on the PC which supplies the internet connectivity and that usually serves as the main port which distributes the connectivity to the other systems. But if they are to be used for plain networking without internet it can be installed on any of the systems but usually it is advisable to install on the desktop as it is usually more stable than the laptop.
Hope this solution has been helpful?

Can you do a drawing of what you are doing?

What was your setup before this problem?

Are you installing the Belkin router to provide wireless access to other devices??

Can you be more specific of what you need?

Based on what you wrote..

You have an ethernet card on the desktop PC.

The router usually has 4 ports for connecting devices and one port for connecting the incoming internet connection.

You need to plug first the ISP cable to the Router on the port specially for it and the other 4 goes to any computer.

Check if the cables are OK by connecting them directly to the computer from the wall. If there is internet on both cables, then you need to work on the router.

Check the user manual to setup the router. There is usually a CD which will help you with this otherwise, you will use the manual IP method.

Hope it helps.

Click the below links to go to download the firmware
http://www.belkin.com/support/article/?lid=en&pid=f5d5231-4&aid=5128&scid=220

once you download the firmware i have given you the instructions to update in your router

Upgrading the router's firmware

The following steps show you how to update your routers firmware using its web interface. You do not need to be connected to the Internet as this interface is built into the router itself.

Setup Steps

  1. Download the firmware from the above link
  2. Save the file to a location on your computer where you can get to it easily, such as your desktop.
  3. Connect the computer to one of the four LAN ports on the router.

  4. Open a web browser on the computer.
  5. In the address bar of the web browser, type http://192.168.2.1 and press Enter on your keyboard.
  6. Click Login in the upper right-hand corner of the page. The router does not ship with a password, so just click Submit.

  7. Click on "Firmware Update" toward the bottom of the left-hand menu.

  8. Click the Browse button toward the middle of the screen to search for the file you saved previously.
Note: The firmware version in the images below is depicted as an example. Your file name will vary depending on your model and version.

  9. Select the firmware file by left-clicking on it and then click the Open button in the lower right corner of the window. This will take you back into the router's interface.

  11. A prompt asking, "Are you sure you want to continue with upgrading?" will appear. Click OK.
  12. A second prompt will open telling you the router will not respond during the upgrade and warning you not to remove the power supply to the router. Click OK once more.

I get a signal from my router but it keeps saying

Some router settings may have changed--double check all the settings by going into the routers setup utility Open INTERNET EXPLORER and. In the URL address field, enter the IP address for your wireless router ( the DEFAULT GATEWAY. This information should be contained in your router's manual. If you cannot find it, enter "198.168.1.1" as the address. This is usually the default IP address for most routers.do not type "www" just the number
Enter the username and password for your router. This should also be supplied in the router's manual. If you don't have this information, go to routerpasswords.com and find the brand and model of your router. This site lists the default login information for most wireless routers you can try "ADMIN" for user name and "PASSWORD" for passsword.
You should now be able to see your wireless router settings. You can configure your network ports, as well as SSID (wireless network name) and passwords.

Or you can always reset your router to the "Out-Of-The-Box" setings by pressing the tiny button on the back with a paperclip

Forgot security password

You will need to do a factory reset. Luckily, it is really easy. Here is what you need to do:

  1. Locate the reset hole on the router. The button will be on the back or side of the router.

  1. Leave the router powered on.
  2. Use a paperclip to press and hold in the reset button for 10 seconds

You may have to program your router and/or your computer to see the router. You would be good to reread the manual/cd that comes with your router and run any set up program that comes with it as far as setting IP addresses etc. It isn't hard but will take 10-20 minutes

How can you retrieve your

If it is the login password that you set, you need to reset the router:

Step 1 Locate the reset pinhole on the back of the unit.

Step 2 With the unit powered on, press and hold the Reset button.

Step 3 Hold the Reset button for about 10 seconds.

Step 4 Release the Reset button.

Step 5 The unit will reboot. Allow 20-30 seconds before reconnecting.

Step 6 The device is now at factory defaults.

If it is the Wireless security key/password:

you will need to login to the User Interface (192.168.2.1) via your Internet Browser. Once you have successfully logged into your device you should locate the Menu Heading 'Wireless'and select from its sub-menu the option for 'Encryption'or 'Security'. There you will see you encryption key. The default password is usually blank.

I reset my router back

Check your internet connection settings. If you are using a connection that requires a username and password to connect to the Internet (such as phone-line based DSL or Dialup), It will need to be set up again. If you forgot this account information, or don't have it handy- you will need to contact your ISP for further assistance.

When I try to use

When you installed the router, you provided a password/passphrase for connecting to your wireless network.
Apparently you didn't write this down or someone else set up the router.
If you don't have access to the admin console on the router either, you'll have to do a factory reset of the router to allow you to set it all up all over again.
This time, make a note of your passwords.
