20 Most Recent Canon PowerShot A40 Digital Camera - Page 3 Questions & Answers

Ahh the A40, one of my all-time favorite cameras from Canon (it's hard to take a bad picture with that camera when it's placed in "Auto"). But I digress.

Your question comes up several times a day here in the camera section at Fixya. But please note, it's very hard to troubleshoot individual software problems online, and it likely is a software issue. But why put up with the headaches of bad software in the first place?
Please don't take the following as a sales pitch as it's not, but please see this article, as it describes the use of an inexpensive card reader as a much easier, faster, and less error prone way to download your photos. In fact there are several important reasons discussed in the article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue.

Make sure that you find a card reader that is stated capable of reading CF cards. Many of the "all-in-one" readers can do that.

Don't worry, you don't really need it to use your camera. Just get a card reader (compact flash or "CF" for your camera) and then you can get the photos off your camera onto your computer easily. You may even be able to plug the camera in with the cable and use the operating system's software to download pictures that way.

I never use the software provided with my powershot anyway. You can use a free alternative like Picassa (google it.) The only thing you might lose is the ability to stich panoramas together.

Set to playback menu, select the picture and unlock it. Read the manual on how to unlock the pictures

Same problem but with a different camera. Turns out, these cameras are very... may I emphasize very... picky as to which cards to use. Try other off-brands and you'll be surprised as to what it takes.

Don't give up on your A40 just yet. I still have mine, and although it's only a 2MP camera, IMO the pictures that it can produce in auto mode are some of the best from Canon's line of cameras.
But unfortunately as you've discovered there is no driver for its use with Window's Vista. What this means is that you can't plug the camera directly into your computer to download pictures. But that may be a blessing in disguise as there is an alternative, much easier way, to download photos from digital cameras.
Most professional photographers utilize inexpensive external card readers to download their photos. There are several important reasons discussed in this blog article for using a card reader vice downloading from the camera. USB Card readers are also very inexpensive these day, with cost virtually not an issue. If you do purchase one, make sure that it is stated CF card capable, and for use with Window's Vista.

Make sure the ISO is set on the correct exposure for daylight.. try say 100 or 200 if its set for flash at say 60 nor 30 and you try to use it in brighter or daylight it will overexpose.

Fear not. This sounds like it might be a defective CCD imager. If so, Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. This is regardless of your camera's warranty status. Please check the following two links for more info:

Applicable cameras include:

PS. I still got my old A40 too, and will never get rid of it. I have many other cameras, mostly Canons, and for prints none of them matches the vibrant colors and clarity of my A40 in Auto.
