In the short term you can take the memory card out and use a card reader - at least that will let you see the pictures.

When I take a flash photo in certain lighting

Those are dust particles in the air reflecting the flash from the camera. This happens on point and shoot cameras because the flash is almost in line with the lens.

It will not open iphoto on my mac osx

Get yourself a Card reader. Take the card out of the camera and plug it into the mac (Your printer may already have one built in) The card is a USB mass storage device and should pop up onto the desktop without bothering with the camera. iPhoto will not open automatically so just drag the card contents onto the iPhoto icon in the dock. It will then open up and transfer all the pictures automatically.
I haven't plugged my camera into the computer now for about 3 years.

If you have dropped your camera at any time, I would recommend that you take it to a camera repair shop, or sending it in to Canon. It sounds like the ribbon cable from the CCD or CMOS to the circuit board has disconnected.

Canon A85 Digital camera white vertical lines in view mode.

Download the pictures to your computer...are the white lines still on the pictures? this way you can isolate whether the problem lies with the ccd or the lcd itself. If its just on the lcd i would just use the camera and deal with it. If its a CCD problem then your best bet is going to be replacing the camera.
Thank you,
Lee

A85 LCD stays off in all modes except "stitch"

Hi Toonz
I have exactly the same problem as Shimoni and Antonio with my 4 years old A85.
But sorry, its not a problem of the CCD, cause we all get a clear actual picture on the LCD but just in stitch mode! In any other shooting or playback mode the LCD is dark. So the sensor must be working well and Canon Germany doesnt repair for free. Our failure is different and we have to pay much more than the camera is worth ;-((

If what I said is the problem, please specify which OS you are using on your computer. Please get back with the clarification and I will surely help you.

Where can i find a Canon A85 camera service manual

Hi,
Please never try to open a camera if you do not know how to do it the internal spares are very delicate and if something broke then it will cost you more than cleaning the cam in any service store.

When camera is switched on ready to take a picture

If you can see the menu icons on the LCD, and can view earlier photos from your memory card, you probably have an image sensor (CCD) failure. See this link for details. If Canon determines that this is the problem, they will repair your camera at no cost, regardless of warranty status.
