The software depends on the camera being plugged into the computer, and having the camera turned on.

Not only you did not mention the PowerShot model, there are almost 100 different ones, Canon only sells these manuals to certified repair centres. Reading the manual suggests the repair is easy, but without the special knowledge, tools and skills you won't be able to repair. Like reading an extensive description, with graphical extras, about how to operate an appendix will not, be enough to do the operation yourself. Not sure. When it is defect, or the electronics inside the camera is defect, it can't be repaired by the user. (repairs now can cost more than a new camera) Be try pressing the display button several times, while in recording or in viewing mode.

You need a exif viewer, to see what date you shot the picture. Some cameras allow you to put the date visual in the photo but it must be setup before you shoot. And for these pictures you can't remove the date when you don't need it. get the program here and load your picture in this program: EXIF Viewer

Ebay was selling one for a few dollars in working condition, you are better off buying a used one or a none working one making sure the battery door is good. You can replace the battery door but it will require you to take the front and rear cover of the camera off. You will have to take off the little screws all around the camera and the pry apart the front and rear case. Sometimes you can use a pair of small needle nose pliers and just squeeze the ends of the plastic battery door inwards from the hinge and the battery cover should pop out. To install the new battery door you do the same, squeeze the plastic axle and push it into the cameras case.

On a powershot? when you say you can't see anything through the lens, do you mean on the lcd screen?
