Nov 30, 2007 - It was a fix for a Canon A520, but am not sure if it would work for ..... I have a Canon Powershot A540 which will not turn on and lens is stuck out extended.... (even when they are new) in camera mode and not playback mode.
My on/off button has stopped working, removed batteries to switch off.
It is common on these type of cameras. If you are good at taking things apart, you can do as I did with a Panasonic. I purchased some small screw drives and took it apart. it is a job in its self. not for the faint of heart. BUt I did manage to get it working using turner cleaner, called deoxit. You can get a small can an try to just ever so small of a spray with the straw attached and let it do its work. Cleaning it solved my proble. Others have used it without removing the back and it worked for some. Every camera is differrent. Good luck

I would venture to take it apart and see if you can do the repair yourself. Hardly a store I know of will even take a point an shoot camera apart today and work on them. If you find one make sure the price is right before letting them check it out. It may not be repairable. I have taken several cameras apart, purchased off ebay. SOme I wish I had never touched, and some were very easy to fix. It takes small tools and time. Cameras are so cheap today you may just want a new one, and features are amamzing . I will add that if you dont document everything as you go you will never get it back together. The most frustrating part is to get there and see a broken part you cant purchase and no way to glue it back because its so small you cant. Good luck
Shut off card locked
SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.
My camera will turn on then go off and the lens will not go out how do i fix this?
The manual is a bit confusing. I do have a power shot, but is is a bit younger. My camera does have 2 On buttons. One to put it in shooting mode. And one to set it in display mode. If I press the display button (arrow right) the lens stays where it is and I only can see pictures I took. When I press the on off button the lens comes out.
I think you only have to switch the main dial to the camera logo (shooting Mode) and then press the Disp button, to shoot pictures and if you want to view pictures, you turn the dial to playback Mode (arrow to the right) and press the Disp button.
If it works, no fix, just knowledge about how the camera works. It is all in the manual.
Canon Powershot A520: The camera it self shuts
I believe you should do a complete reset. If this can be done through the Menu all good. If not, remove the memory back-up battery for some 30 seconds and re-insert. In most cases this cures the problem. The back-up battery I think (from memory) is next to the AA batteries, a little grey cover with CR1220 stamped on it or something. Good Luck
Settings for taking pictures
What kind of picture do you want to take? What do you want that picture to say to the viewer? There are a lot of different settings because there are a lot of different types of pictures. You don't want the same settings for a landscape picture as for a portrait picture. You probably wouldn't want the same settings for a portrait of a young girl as for a portrait of her grandfather. If you're not comfortable choosing the settings yourself, set the camera to the appropriate scene mode. For taking pictures of people use the Portrait mode, for taking pictures of where you are on vacation use the Landscape mode, and so on.If you want to learn more, your local library probably has some introductory photography books that tell you how the various settings such as aperture and shutter speed affect your pictures.
