Help!
Hi
It sounds like you have a defective CCD sorry to say, there's nothing you can do to fix the problem without replacing the CCD.
You can try resetting everything via the setup menu, but I do not believe that will help.
Instead of sending it in to Canon for a complete new lens for $200, you should try just replacing the CCD first and see if that solves the problem. Why replace more parts than are needed? You can check eBay for a defective camera and pull the CCD out and put it in yours, or you can pay somebody to do it for you.
Please check around and you will see, you won't find anybody who will fix the camera for less than $150+, though I do know one camera repair business that will do it for much less... because I own it.
If you need help finding an affordable repair service please let me know.
Good luck from: Darntoothysam com

Turned on 'protect' mode on Canon PowerShot SD 300 and cannot turn off!
the only thing i can suggest is to buy a card reader that connects to pc via a USB. dont know where you are from, but here in uk they vary in price from about £5. if your card is an SD card, make sure the card itself is not locked, there is a little switch on one side, usually white, this switch slides one way is locked, the other unlocked. apart from that i cant think of anything else.
good luck

You can set Flash function by pressing flash button on camera. Button has 3 type of settings, flash Auto, Force, Off. If you need further help, please go to flash function in user manual and if you need further help, post back here.

I seemed to have resolved my current issue. Previously I was reading my SD card through a card reader. I must have had a duff connection which caused the corrupt files.
I connected the camera directly through usb and the pictures transferred with no problems.
Thanks for all your help.

You don't. Your camera will require service. Call Canon tech support.
A whole new problem...
Did you fix the previous problem? If so, was it a missing or loose screw?
As for your current problem, you may have accidentally pressed the LCD display on/off button (it manually turns off the LCD display to save battery life). Turn on your camera and press the DISP button once. It's located on the back of your camera in the lower left corner.
Focuses but never takes picture
Try a mode other than auto, and turn off the flash. Then try taking a picture. Did it work? If so, then your flash is either burned out, or the flash safety circuit thinks that the camera is open. If the flash is burned out, then professional repair is required, as a flash change-out is not trivial (Call 1-800-OK-CANON).
However, as mentioned it may be only a break in the safety circuit. Canon usually some of the screws in the camera case to serve as a means of detecting if the case is open (and thus disables the flash to prevent shock). Examine all the screws around the perimeter of your case. Are they all there and tight? If not, try moving and replacing any missing screws with one of the others that are still there.

This may sound silly, but did you check the shutter on the end of the lens when the camera is on to make sure that the shutter is open? Sometimes some dirt or sand can get into the lens barrel and make the shutter get stuck in the closed position. If this happens, gently open the shutter with a a toothpick or something (NOT your finger because of the oils and NOT something that will scratch the lens).
If the shutter is open and the pictures turn out black both on the camera's LCD and on the computer once you download them, then I'm guessing something happened to your CCD, which is the tiny electronic chip that records the light coming through the lens. Either something inside the camera has fallen in front of the CCD and is blocking the light (unlikely) or the CCD chip has died. If that's the case, I hate to say it but buying a new camera would be more cost effective (and probably cheaper) than getting it fixed.

No you fix or probably camera shop fix either
These little item are considered 'consumable'
The cost of underaking any work assuming part are available is as much as a new[more high specified] replacement
