What is error 99 in canon eos 20d
It's a frustrating catch all error and needs service. The camera may have any one of numerous issues or lens issues. If you have more than one lens, see if the error occurs with both lenses on. If not then it's a lens error. A camera repair facility can plug unit the camera and download a more accurate troubleshooting code. Royal Camera Service in Hanover Park, IL is good source for this problem. The replaced the shutter on my 20D when I got the error 99 code.

Error 99 when using Quantum Transceiver
Error code 99 is a non specific error code a sort of catch all. Remove the lens and clean the contacts (lens and camera), remove the battery and the memory card. Leave the camera in this state for about 10 mins, enough time to discharge any build up of charge or static. Reinsert the battery and the memory card and reattach the (cleaned) lens switch on leave for 5 seconds and press the shutter button to see if this has cleared to problem.

Check your menu settings and be sure the monochrome effect is not on.
What does err cf mean
That error means that the card that holds images is having issues. Take the card out and try another one or take it out and format it in a computer or see if you can format it in the camera.
Err 99 what is
Err 99 could mean several different things, such as... Memory Card, Lens or Lens contacts....
Here's what you can try:
Remove the memory card an enable "shooting with out memory card" and see if you still get the error. If it works your memory card is bad. Try another lens if you can. Clean the lens contacts with a pencil eraser (be careful not to get eraser dust in the camera body or in the lens). Worst case scenario is, Err 99 could be related to the shutter failing which would mean a trip to Canon.

It sounds like the light meter in the camera itself is probably broken and needs to be taken to a repair shop. Try using it in manual mode until you can get it fixed.

This is a basic fix, but have you removed the lens from the camera body and reattached it all? Check all of the connections while you're in there. Hope this helps =]
When looking through the lens - it is dark and all
Is there a filter on the lens? remove the filter and try that. What mode are you shooting in? Switch to "P" for program and the camera will balance the light meter to a correct exposure. When looking through the camera viewfinder yes things will look darker then the scene because of all the glass and stuff the light is traveling through to get to your eye. Sort of like looking at something then putting a pair of sunglasses on. That part is normal. Also the faster the F stop the brighter the viewfinder will be. So lets say your 18-55 is an F4 lens. A lens that is an F2 will be a stop brighter and a lens that is F1.2 will be even brighter then that. You might not be paying attention to the light meter in the viewfinder which for correct exposure the needle needs to be in the middle between the - and + symbols.

You may have a corrupt memory card, so try another one. Worst case would be the camera's buffer is not writing the files to the card at all, which is too expensive to repair for the value of the camera.
