Why do I get Error 99 in my Canon EOS 350 D?

I have been experiencing sporatic error 99 messages for the past 1 week with my kit lens and my Canon EF-S, 18-55 mm, 1:3.5 - 5.6 II. This original Lens was bought along with the Camera. I have taken just over 10,000 exposures with my camera in 16 months. If I change the lens, the camera works fine. I have done this, but still the error continues : 1. Carefully clean the 8 gold color lens contact pins on the camera body lens mount with a pencil eraser. Do this while holding the camera so that any eraser dust will not fall into the camera. 2. Take out both batteries. Also remove the CF memory card. 3. With the batteries removed, turn the camera switch on for 3-5 minutes. He said that this clears the memory. 4. Turn the camera off and put the batteries and CF card back in. 5. Re-attach the lens and turn it back on.

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
Does the “ERR 99′ message appear? If it does, then the camera should be
serviced. If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of steps:
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
Does the “ERR 99′ message appear? If so, then the CF card is the most
likely source of the issue. Try using a different card.
If the message does not appear, please complete the following steps:
1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the lens contacts by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraser
or soft cloth. Be careful that you do not let any debris fall into the
camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
If the “ERR 99′ message only appears when one particular lens is
attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.
If you see the “ERR 99′ with a different Canon lens attached, then the
camera should be serviced.

I agree with dovi. I actually emailed canon and here is what they said and how to do it; Thank you for your inquiry regarding your digital SLRs. We value you asa Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you, and I'm sorry to hear that you're running into the "error 1" message. From what you mentioned, it sounds like the lens might be having problems communicating with your cameras. One thing you could try is toclean the contact points on your lens and your camera. If you have not done this yet you can do so by turning the camera off, removing the lens, then brushing those copper points on both the lens and the camera body with something like a clean eraser. Should problems continue, I would suggest that you go to a local camera shop and try a different lens. That way you can determine whether the problem is due to the lens or to your cameras. I hope this is helpful Jason

Canon Digital Rebel XT: error 05

When I try to take pictures in the standard mode I get an error 05 message. I have read in my manual that it means something has obstructed the automatic flash pop-up, however, my flash has popped up. It pops up and then the release lever for the flash clicks twice. The manual says to turn the camera off and back on. It does the same thing (but clicks three times instead since the flash is already up). I am able to take pictures on other settings, just not the automatic setting (green box). Can I fix it on my own or do I have to take it to a dealer?

I had the sticking and two-clicks problem also. I manually pulled the flash up, then took a Q-tip dipped in standard rubbing alcohol and ran it over all the sliding mechanism parts of the flash. Then I rubbed the dry end of the Q-tip over it all agan and it now works fine.

My Canon digital rebel will not autofocus correctly.

My Canon digital rebel will not autofocus correctly. My camera has 7 points autofocus, but it will only autofocus on the far right point. All other points are not used. I have had the camera for 14 months and the problem just began. If I want to focus on anything in the left to center of the field of vision, I cannot do it. However, the lens focuses manually very well.

Why won't my camera focus on other points than the far right one?

I had this problem awhile ago - you must have accidently adjusted the focal area - it is sooooo easy to do without realising it. Here is what I was told:
**************************

Most likely, you have changed the AF point, which only takes effect in the creative modes (Manual, Av, Tv, P, etc)

There should be a button on your camera that has a grid like pattern above it, like
-
- - - - -
-

or so. press that, look through the viewfinder, and move the shutter or rear wheel, you should see the different AF points like up in red, and as you turn different ones will light up, and eventually all of them. also, you can look on the screen on top (or back, if its a rebel) and it will show you which ones are selected while in that mode, instead of looking through the viewfinder.

My XT will not connect to Vista.

I have had a Rebel XT for about a year now and all the software to download my pictures was on my old laptop, with Windows XP. I recently bought a laptop with windows Vista, and I installed all the software for my camera from the CD's (EOS Utility, Camera Window, Zoombrowser, etc) but when I attach my camera to my computer and open the EOS utility, I cannot upload any pictures to my computer, it doesn't recognize that my camera is even plugged in.

On the camera's menu system, under Setup2, look for the option titled "Clear Settings". When selected, you can either clear just the Custom Settings, or you can clear all camera settings, which restores it to the factory defaults.

Try changing the "communication" setting on the camera from "PC Computer" to "PTP"
Menu > Tools2 (wrench/hammer/2) Communication = Print/PTP

You need to change the camera's USB connection mode from "PC" to "Print/PTP" in camera setting menu. After that it should be recognized by Windows 7 without drivers.
